She was a regular guest on the Netfreaks podcast and was a YouTuber at some point. Guillermo del Toro said “hi” to her once. Prime Video has a new Vikings series that is officially set to premiere in just a couple of months, and even better is that it’s already renewed for a second season. Historical drama is a very popular genre on TV, with some of its most notable projects ranking among the best TV shows of all time, such as Band of Brothers, Shōgun, and The Crown. Also among them is Vikings, created by Michael Hirst, who also created The Tudors. Vikings aired on the History Channel for six seasons, with the second half of the final season released on Prime Video. Vikings tells the story of legendary Viking figure Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his raids, journeys, and battles alongside his Viking brothers. Despite a change of protagonists, Vikings maintained its popularity through its entire run, ending in 2021. One year later, Vikings got a sequel series, Vikings: Valhalla, on Netflix. Vikings: Valhalla ran for three seasons and is set over a century after the ending of the main show, thus telling the stories of new characters. Now, a new Vikings show is coming to Prime Video with Bloodaxe, and its first trailer promises lots of action, drama, and the type of stories seen in Vikings. Even better, Bloodaxe has already been renewed for a second season, which speaks volumes about the quality of this new Vikings show, but the question about its link to Hirst’s first show remains. Bloodaxe Is A New Story By Vikings’ Creator Created by Michael and Horatio Hirst, Bloodaxe is a historical drama TV series that, just like Vikings, is set during the Viking Age. Bloodaxe, then, takes the audience all the way back to the 10th century to meet Viking warrior Erik Bloodaxe (Xavier Molyneux) and his wife, Gunnhild (Jessica Madsen), known as the “Mother of Kings.” The series chronicles their fight for the throne of Norway, all while the land is torn apart by rivalries and betrayals. The chaos taking over the kingdom draws other Scandinavian rulers in, as well as the powerful English ruler Athelstan, King of Wessex (Rod Hallett), but Erik’s biggest rival is none other than his younger half-brother, Haakon (Levi Miller). As mentioned above, the first trailer for Bloodaxe gives a good taste of the tone and style of the show, which is very similar to that of Vikings, with epic battles, lots of drama (especially family drama), and unexpected betrayals, with stunning cinematography that promises an immersive experience. Bloodaxe is set for a January 20, 2027, release, with all eight episodes expected to be released at once instead of opting for a weekly release schedule. Months before Bloodaxe’s premiere, Amazon renewed the show for a second season, which only increases anticipation and excitement around the show even more, while also putting extra pressure on it as expectations are even higher now. Is Bloodaxe Connected To Vikings & Vikings: Valhalla? Image via Prime Video With Bloodaxe sharing its creator with Vikings, the inevitable question of whether the shows are connected or not remains. At the time of writing, there’s no official word on Bloodaxe and Vikings being connected or the former being a sequel or successor of some kind to the latter, even if the timeline fits. Vikings features the Lindisfarne raid in 793, which marked the beginning of the Viking Age, while Vikings: Valhalla covers the beginning of the end of the Viking Age. Bloodaxe is set between the two shows, more specifically in the 10th century, and the main character has a direct link to Vikings. Erik Bloodaxe’s father was Harald Fairhair, who appeared in Vikings, played by Peter Franzén, and, although both shows have a character named Athelstan, there’s no historical connection, as the one in Vikings is loosely based on the King that the Bloodaxe character is based on. While Bloodaxe could later be integrated into the universe of Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla, for now, the show isn’t linked to Hirst’s past shows. However, Vikings is still a perfect preparation for Bloodaxe, not just due to certain characters and events, but due to its tone and style.
