Amazon is in the process of reinvigorating the James Bond franchise, and a new TV series coming to streaming in the next few months will get 007 fans particularly excited. It’s the streaming giant’s first British spy series about the agency where Bond works, MI6, starring an actor who’s already appeared in the franchise. The show will be released on MGM’s premium network MGM+, which is also a sister service to Prime Video, at some point in the next two months. Aptly named Secret Service, it’s a five-part miniseries adapted from Tom Bradby’s novel of the same name, about an intelligent agent’s attempts to thwart a Russian conspiracy from infiltrating the British government. Amid speculation about the potential for a James Bond TV show produced by Amazon, this spy thriller has arrived in the streamer’s lap fully formed, and it couldn’t be a more perfect reinvention of the premise for 007’s many undercover missions. Adapted by Bradby himself, with a talented ensemble cast featuring Gemma Arterton, Rafe Spall, and Alex Kingston, it’s a diverting four hours of television that barely lets us pause for breath. While it can’t match the grandeur or slow-burning intensity of Britain’s very best spy TV shows, Secret Service is a welcome antidote to the fanciful theatrics of traditional espionage thrillers. It’s full of grit and pulls no punches, but also proffers a grounded sense of realism that makes its central protagonist a genuine and relatable hero. Secret Service Is Coming To Amazon’s MGM+ Platform Soon Now that Secret Service has found its North American streaming home on MGM+, it’s surely only a matter of time before the show’s release date on the platform is confirmed. There’s a good chance it will be out before the end of 2026. Confirmation that the miniseries had secured an international streaming deal with Amazon arrived at the backend of August. The agreement covers not only the United States, but Canada, Latin America, and Italy, too. Secret Service originally aired in the United Kingdom on ITV, between April 27 and May 5 this year. Ironically, it’s based on a book written by ITV’s News at Ten anchor Tom Bradby, who’s a prolific novelist specializing in the spy genre, as well as a journalist. Bradby co-wrote the scripts for the novel's screen adaptation, alongside Jemma Kennedy. Secret Service tells the story of Kate Henderson, an MI6 officer who heads up the team gathering intelligence on Russia. Henderson finds herself leading an investigation into a conspiracy to infiltrate the British government that can be traced to actors in Moscow at the very highest level. Gemma Arterton’s Secret Service Character Is A Female Version Of James Bond From the moment that Gemma Arterton was cast in Secret Service, parallels were drawn between the series and the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace, in which Arterton played the Bond girl Strawberry Fields. This time around, though, she’s the protagonist of a female-led MI6 operation. Her character feels like a version of James Bond that’s much closer to reality than the international man of mystery created by Ian Fleming. Kate Henderson has a family at home, personal and professional vulnerabilities, and her job as a high-level operative mostly involves sitting at a desk. Yet, Henderson’s relatability actually allows us to see her in an even more heroic light. She isn’t a make-believe ideal with a highly questionable attitude towards women. Instead, she’s an ordinary employee overburdened with work. It just so happens that the work she does involves saving the British political system from malevolent outside interference. Even if Kate Henderson is more grounded as a character than James Bond, though, Secret Service still has its fair share of shaken-not-stirred swagger and high-octane thrills. What’s more, Arterton looks every bit the part as a secret agent leading her country’s most important undercover mission. Cast Gemma Arterton Kate Henderson
