‘Amazing’ Brit pop star lined up to headline Glastonbury alongside Harry Styles after receiving ‘well overdue’ invite

THE last time Sam Smith headlined Glastonbury was 12 years ago. Now I’m told Sam, who will release new album Hazel Eyes on August 21, could return to Worthy Farm next summer to join soon-to-be announced Pyramid stage headliner Harry Styles. I watched as they performed their 2013 hit Latch to a massive crowd. I’ve no doubt if Sam heads back to Worthy Farm next June, fans will turn up in their droves. But whether Sam camps this time, instead of staying in a hotel, would be up for discussion. In 2024, Sam admitted the idea of slumming it — even in a posh Winnebago — was out of the question, saying on stage: “I’ve wimped out this time, I’m staying at a hotel. “That’s why I’m clean, I’m sorry. Don’t boo me. I’m sorry. I’m not as strong as you all.” Most read in Showbiz The headline performance would be the perfect warm-up for Sam, ahead of other gigs already planned next year. Sam, whose new single Oh Mother ft. The TwoCity Chorus is out now, will play an eight-date residency at the London Coliseum from September 8 to 19, and two shows at Manchester’s Albert Hall at the start of that month. Sam is looking for budding music stars to come up on stage. Working with Radio 1’s New Music Show with Jack Sanders, artists can upload their music to BBC Introducing’s Uploader from next Wednesday and select the Sam Smith tag. I had heard whispers a while ago that he was in talks for the gig, which would come 30 years after his debut solo album Life Thru A Lens hit the charts in 1997. But now I’m even more sure Robbie will do it — after he announced two shows for the week after the festival, including headlining Lancashire’s Lytham Festival. That’s a tell-tale clue because three of the past five stars to play Glasto’s Legends showpiece — Shania Twain in 2024, Diana Ross in 2022 and Kylie Minogue in 2019 — also performed at Lytham the same summer. And Robbie — who sang at Sunday’s World Cup closing ceremony in New York — has made no secret of the fact he is keen to get back to Glastonbury. He made headlines when he visited the festival at Somerset’s Worthy Farm as a punter in 1995 — then three years later as a solo sensation he played to a massive crowd at the Pyramid Stage. In 2023, Robbie said of Glasto: “It does a remarkable thing for perception, and I know there would be a lot of people there who have an oblique understanding of what I am. “But if they saw me do it, I would take their heads off. “I look forward to doing that if I get the opportunity because I know there are a lot of heads out there that, once they see what it is, they will know — instead of having a feeling it might be something it isn’t.” I’m now counting the days, Robbie.
