Always Lalisa documentary about Blackpink star Lisa gets cinematic release

A documentary that follows a “pivotal year” in Blackpink singer Lisa’s life is set for a cinematic release.The Thai rapper, singer, dancer and actress – full name Lalisa Manobal – rose to fame as part of the South Korean girl group Blackpink, which has since gone on to become one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.Five years after the band debuted, in 2021 Lisa went on to release her debut single Lalisa, followed by her solo studio album Alter Ego in 2025.The singer, 29, is now also the subject of the documentary Always Lalisa.A documentary following Blackpink’s Lisa is heading for the big screen (Doug Peters/PA)PA ArchiveDirected by Sue Kim, distributors Sony Music Vision have said the film follows a “pivotal year” in the performer’s life where “for the first time since childhood, she steps away from Blackpink for a year of independence”.“With the clock ticking before her return to the group, Lisa confronts the fear and pressure of launching a solo career, pursuing acting, and building a brand, while yearning to maintain a personal life beyond the spotlight,” a synopsis for the film has teased.Always Lalisa will open in Imax and cinemas worldwide via Trafalgar Releasing for a limited time from October 12, before it streams exclusively on YouTube Premium later this year.Sony Music Vision president Tom Mackay said the film offered an “intimate look” at the singer’s “incredible journey”.Trafalgar Releasing chief executive Marc Allenby has said the film “gives fans an unguarded look at Lisa’s trajectory from Blackpink stardom into one of the most recognised artists in the world”.“Lisa is an absolute force of nature who has built an incredibly special connection with her fans at her home on YouTube,” the company’s global head of music Lyor Cohen said.“She is constantly pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to be a global superstar,” he added.Cohen also said the film’s streaming rollout would give “millions of fans a front-row seat to her evolution as an artist”.Blackpink debuted in 2016 (Doug Peters/PA)PA ArchiveIn recent years Lisa has performed at the opening ceremony of the Fifa World Cup, Coachella, served on the Met Gala’s host committee, and presented at the Golden Globes, as well as making history as the first K-pop artist to hold a Las Vegas residency – which will see her perform four sold-out shows at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in November.Read MoreShe also made her acting debut last year in the third season of The White Lotus and has been a global ambassador for luxury fashion houses Celine, Bulgari, and Louis Vuitton.While she remains part of Blackpink, Lisa’s upcoming EP, Press Play, will also be released on October 23.Tickets for the theatrical release of Always Lalisa will go on sale on September 9.
