Alleged MCG nacho-thrower faces assault charges after Hawthorn, Brisbane match turned ugly

September 23, 2026 — 12:31pmA man who allegedly threw a plate of nachos at a woman and child at the MCG on Saturday night is expected to be charged with assault, police say.Dozens of fans pelted cans and bottles at the umpires when they left the field following Hawthorn’s nine-point loss to Brisbane, while they also vocally booed over contentious game-defining decisions late in the epic contest.Umpires dodge projectiles as they exit the ground.AFL Photos via Getty ImagesEarlier this week, police confirmed five fans had been fined for their behaviour, including a 40-year-old man from Croydon who threw a bottle that hit a woman.Police said they were investigating reports a plate of nachos had been thrown at a woman and child about 8pm on the night of the game.Neither were injured, but the woman went to police about the incident the following day.A 34-year-old man from Seaford was interviewed by police on Tuesday, and is expected to be charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful assault and discharging a missile.Police on Wednesday also said a 56-year-old man from Tullamarine had been interviewed after allegedly throwing a bottle onto the field after the match. He was issued with a penalty notice and fined $418.“Police continue to make enquiries, along with key stakeholders, in relation to the incident,” they said in a statement.From our partners
