Depot Maintenance Teams emerged in the mid-1980s under the name Rivet Mile. The organization later became the 583rd Missile Maintenance Squadron. Technicians have continued inspecting and repairing suspension systems throughout the fleet. The Minot operation took that work a step further by moving an entire system for refurbishment. That approach created a significant logistical challenge. The team had to remove the component, transport it to California, and prepare it for its return to an active launch facility. Civilian specialists The 583rd Missile Maintenance Squadron occupies an unusual position within the Air Force’s nuclear mission. It has no active-duty personnel and relies entirely on civilian employees. The squadron has 196 workers spread across five geographically separate units. Those locations include Minot, Malmstrom, and F.E. Warren Air Force Bases. Vandenberg Space Force Base and Hill Air Force Base also host squadron units. Together, the workforce brings more than 250 combined years of Minuteman III experience at each base, according to the Air Force. KyAnn Betz, the squadron’s director, said the unit holds authorization for depot-level maintenance at Minuteman III facilities. Its technicians work on both underground and above-ground infrastructure. Each missile wing also has a dedicated maintenance shop for manufacturing and repairs. The team can support field-level maintenance when local crews need additional expertise. Sustaining an aging arsenal The refurbishment matters because Minuteman III remains a central part of America’s nuclear deterrent. The missile forms the land-based component of the nation’s nuclear triad. Keeping that infrastructure operational requires more than maintaining the missiles themselves. Supporting systems inside launch facilities also need inspection, repair, and occasional major refurbishment.
