Aldi’s releasing a king-size duvet for £20 tomorrow – but I’ve found one for half the price at major retailer

Credit: Alan Morris ALDI has a king-size duvet in its middle aisle this week for just £19.99, perfect for the time of year when students are gearing up for halls, and the rest of us start dreaming of a nice, big duvet for the coming months. However, there’s also a 13.5 tog king-size duvet selling at Asda, and it’s just half the price. That’s a price difference of £9.49 for an identical tog rating. The George Home Basic Duvet is 13.5 tog for the king size, measuring 225 x 220cm. The filling is also hollowfibre polyester with a non-woven cover, giving you a fine mesh rather than the softer, brushed casing you might find with more expensive duvets. Of course, it’s most likely going into a duvet cover, so it doesn’t really matter. It’s machine-washable but not tumble-dryer safe, so you’ll need to find somewhere to hang it out to dry. A 13.5 tog is more suitable for winter than for year-round, so it might get put away for six months at a time. One reviewer called it “a GREAT item for the price, and really warm too”. Another wrote that they had recently bought one at “double the price than this elsewhere” and found that the two duvets were pretty much the same quality. There are some criticisms, with a three-star reviewer saying it is a “good thick duvet but after a few months the fibres collect in clumps”, and another finding that the non-woven cover tends to slide around inside the cover. If you’re currently shopping for a duvet you plan to keep for years, you may want to spend more than this, but for a warm, king-size duvet for the spare room or student digs, it’s still a lot of tog for your money.
