Albania ‘Not Ready for the Risks’ as AI Enters the Electoral Arena

Artificial intelligence has already entered the electoral arena all around the world. From fake audio recordings of candidates to videos making politicians appear to utter words they never said, AI-generated deepfakes are increasingly used to discredit political opponents, shape voters’ perceptions and influence their electoral behaviour. Albania is no exception. From last year’s general elections to the marathon anti-government protests known as the “Flamingo Revolution”, AI has been widely used to produce online political content, often in harmful forms. During the 2025 parliamentary polls, disinformation campaigns targeting political actors were orchestrated through anonymous pages and spread across digital platforms. During the ongoing “Flamingo Revolution” protests, BIRN has identified dozens of cases in which AI was used to disseminate false information, which was then amplified through anonymous social media pages and accounts.
