But unauthorised sildenafil and tadalafil is now being added to products including honey paste, honey sticks and honey-based food supplements.The researchers, whose findings were published in the journal Molecules, are demanding tighter controls on the 'aphrodisiac honey'. Doses of Viagra in some products were found to exceed the recommended daily maximum a user should take.Dr Joanna Wojtacka, who led the study, said: 'The adulteration of food or food supplements with PDE-5 inhibitors is extremely dangerous for consumers due to their unknown effectiveness and toxic effects.'Even for healthy users, consuming both contaminated honey and alcohol can lead to dangerous drops in blood pressure, and the possibility of passing out. Honey is being laced with dangerously high levels of Viagra and sold as a food stuff to boost your love lifeIn one case, the daily dose of a honey-based product was one sachet a day – it contained a dose of Viagra twice the level of the highest recommended daily amount.'The presence of this type of product on the market should be considered highly alarming,' the researchers, from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland, said.They point out men with ED may already take a range of supplements and be unaware of the drugs in the honey which could lead to dangerous drug interactions.Professor Francis Ratnieks, emeritus professor of apiculture at Sussex University, said: 'Honey has a reputation of being a wholesome and health giving natural product so it can be taken advantage of.'
