Alan Ritchson's hit Prime Video series was renewed for season 5 before season 4 premiered, with filming already underway. The upcoming installment is based on Make Me, the 20th novel in Child’s Jack Reacher series. It starts in pretty classic Reacher fashion, with him getting off a train in the middle of nowhere because a town called Mother’s Rest makes him curious. There, he meets Michelle Chang, a former FBI agent turned private investigator searching for a missing colleague. However, the book is considered one of the darkest entries in Child's book series. While speaking with Collider, Child admitted that even he does not know how the series will handle the book’s central crime. He iterated that the story was "brutal" and "disgusting," even though Reacher is TV-MA. However, he acknowledged, "It’s not fit for family consumption, so I don’t know what they’re going to do about the actual crime in that." “Make Me, which they are — that’s going to be Season 5. How they’re going to do that, I do not know, because that is a brutal story. I mean, it’s a disgusting story, really. It’s not fit for family consumption, so I don’t know what they’re going to do about the actual crime in that. It is relatively rural, you know, the immense plains and cornfields and all of that.” Interestingly, Reacher is known for its high-octane action, with Ritchson's protagonist punching his way through any enemy. For instance, season 4 has one scene where Reacher stabbed someone in the eye, so the series is no stranger to intense violence. Make Me, though, is disturbing in a completely different way. Reacher is not exactly known for walking away from a mystery. In the book Make Me, he joins Chang’s search, which eventually uncovers the horrifying truth about Mother’s Rest. However, what they find is much darker than the corruption and criminal operations Reacher usually runs into. The truth behind Mother’s Rest is that the criminals are targeting suicidal people and turning their deaths into paid entertainment. It is an incredibly dark reveal, even for a series that has never been afraid to get violent. As a result, Child's concerns make sense since the Prime Video series has to unravel a very sensitive subject. Although Reacher season 5 doesn't exactly copy the book, the upcoming episodes also run the risk of losing the main themes and the book's premise. However, Ritchson himself admitted that recent seasons have felt too "safe," which could explain the boldness in tackling a novel like Make Me. Like season 4, Make Me begins with Reacher accidentally walking into someone else’s problem before realizing there is something much bigger going on. The Neagly spinoff also recently dealt with criminals exploiting vulnerable young people through a secret rural operation. Nevertheless, its biggest reveal allows Reacher season 5 to go somewhere the show hasn't quite gone before. The challenge will be keeping what makes the book so unsettling without making the season feel needlessly gruesome or too similar to stories. If season 5 can hold onto that slow-burning mystery and Reacher’s anger once the truth finally comes out, it could feel darker than anything the show has done so far without simply trying to outdo previous seasons with more violence. As the series continues filming the next installment, Prime Video has yet to announce the casting for Chang and other book characters. However, it's expected to release sometime in 2027.
