Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, the sci-fi shooter franchise puts player in the shoes of a soldier in the titular special forces organization who fight to defend the dystopian world known as Super Earth from a variety of enemies, including multiple races of aliens and socio-anarchistic feudalist factions utilizing robotic technology. Development on a Helldivers film was announced in early 2025 after the second game became a runaway hit for Sony, with Fast and Furious vet Justin Lin joining by the end of the year, and Jason Momoa initially being cast before departing over unknown reasons. Now, nearly two weeks after having entered talks to join the big-budget sci-fi video game adaptation, Sony has officially confirmed that Ritchson has been cast for their Helldivers movie. However, the studio has also now revealed that the film, which is being produced through Columbia Pictures, is being hit with a major release delay, moving from its original November 10, 2027 date to June 9, 2028.
