Alabama deputy sheriff arrested on voyeurism, electronic stalking charges

Deputy James Long Reed, 47, was booked into the Pickens County Jail just before 4:30 p.m. Jail records list his charges as one count of first-degree voyeurism and two counts of first-degree electronic stalking. Reed is being held without bond. Sheriff Jordan Powell said the investigation began Sept. 11 when officials became aware of allegations of possible misconduct. The sheriff consulted with the District Attorney’s Office and immediately request the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation take over the probe. Powell said Reed was “relieved of his duties.” Details of the specific allegations against have not yet been made public. “As law enforcement officers, we are held to a higher standard of conduct and accountability,” Powell said. “When an officer fails to meet those standards and violates the law, they should be held accountable just as any other person who commits a crime.”“Our badge does not place us above the law,” he said, “and maintaining the public’s trust requires accountability at every level.” Carol Robinson is a senior reporter for AL.com, covering crime, public safety and breaking news in more than 30 Alabama counties.
