Akron season ticket promo offers one lucky fan chance to call plays

Never accuse college football marketing teams of being unimaginative. Just, you know, normally the head coach gets in the way of a lot of the more out-there ideas. Not so for Akron and Joe Moorhead. In fact, Akron might just have one of the most enterprising ideas of the decade. A fan will be getting the opportunity to call plays during the opening series of the team’s hope opener. Indeed, Akron is going to give one lucky season ticket holder the chance to join Moorhead and his staff to see how an opening script is put together. Then, allegedly, they’ll get to do it and call it themselves during the home opener against Robert Morris. “I’m looking forward to collaborating with the season ticket holder who wins this contest,” Moorhead said in a university press release. “This will give our fans a behind-the-scenes experience that has never been done before anywhere, so I’m excited to show them how to put together the opening script and see what they can do.” The experience also has the endorsement of the school’s athletics director, so everyone’s on board for the one-in-a-lifetime giveaway. How’s it work? More on that below. “We’re always looking for new ways to bring our fans closer to the program,” athletics director Dr. Andrew T. Goodrich said. “This is about giving one of our most loyal supporters a seat at the table, right alongside our coaching staff, on the biggest night of the season.” All Akron season ticket holders will automatically be entered into a random drawing for the promotion. One ticket counts as one entry. However, fans can also gain additional entries. Each successful referral for a season ticket holder will gain the referring party an additional entry. Ticket holders can reach out to the ticket office directly or add referral information into the comments section when purchasing tickets. One winner will then be selected at random from all eligible entrants. The drawing will take place on Aug. 19. The winning fan will then meet with Moorhead and his staff ahead of the Akron game against Robert Morris on Sept. 12 to begin designing their opening script plan. How much will the fan actually be involved in selecting and calling the plays? Well, that much we’ll likely have to wait to hear from the lucky fan themselves. There will certainly be skeptics.
