As a beauty journalist, I’ve spent years testing hundreds, from expensive, luxury formulas to the cheap and cheerful selection at supermarkets. I’ve narrowed down my go-to SPFs to a very small list that I rely on, some for when I want a healthy glow beneath makeup, sweat-proof creams that won’t budge when I’m exercising outdoors, or topping up on the go, or at the beach. After using it down to the very last drop, it quickly became a favourite, but sadly, unavailable in the UK, so I couldn’t replace it. Finally, as of this month, Airyday has finally launched in the UK, with nine different SPF products, so everyone else, and I, can get our hands on it. Buy Now for £39 It was first launched in 2022 by Frances van der Velden, who wanted to create a sunscreen she would wear daily after a scary skin cancer diagnosis and successful treatment. Upon reflection, van der Velden recognised that she wasn’t wearing sun protection nearly as often as she should, simply because she didn’t like the smell, stickiness or thickness of traditional SPFs. And so, Airyday was born. It’s a tried-and-true philosophy; ultimately, the best SPF is the one you want to wear. If it’s a faff, takes ages to absorb or disrupts your makeup, you’re not going to use it enough to provide your skin with much-needed UV protection. The formula just melts onto the skin. It’s precisely because it’s clear that it doesn’t leave any chalky, white cast, has none of the traditional thick, heavy, tacky sensation of other sunscreens – it also means you don’t need a mirror to ensure you’ve rubbed it in properly. I have an oily combination, acne-prone skin, and find that the SPF I use has the biggest impact on whether my foundation lasts or slides off my oily nose, forehead, and chin.
