Air India is India's second-largest airline in terms of scheduled flights and seat capacity (after IndiGo), and its largest international carrier. Like other airlines, it has been making changes to its domestic and international networks. Simple Flying took a look at the airline’s latest scheduled data and found that it has transferred some domestic services to its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express. Internationally, for the current winter season, the Star Alliance member has discontinued four European routes, including its services from Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to the Danish capital, Copenhagen, and the Austrian capital, Vienna. Elsewhere, in the United States, Simple Flying previously reported that the airline had suspended flights to one of the country's major Midwestern aviation hubs until August 31. The airline cited continued airspace restrictions over certain regions and record-high jet fuel prices for international operations as the main reasons for the decision. It stated, “These changes are aimed at improving network stability and reducing last-minute inconvenience to passengers.” At the time, the suspension was scheduled to last from June 1 to August 31. However, Air India has since extended the suspension, and the latest schedule data from aviation analytics provider Cirium shows that no flights are currently scheduled on the route. Notably, along with Chicago, the airline also suspended its services between Delhi and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Although flights did not resume as originally planned, the route is now scheduled to return in January 2027. Air India Has Reduced European Capacity Credit: Markus Mainka | Shutterstock Indeed, the escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East since late February have caused considerable volatility in global energy markets. By late October, jet fuel prices had reportedly exceeded $206 per barrel. This is adding pressure on airlines' operating costs. As noted above, the rising fuel prices are one of the main factors behind its international network changes. In fact, this winter, it has cut several of its European routes. On October 31, it ended its four weekly flights between DEL and VIE, leaving the Austrian capital without a nonstop connection to India. Around 173,500 passengers traveled between Vienna and Indian cities in 2025, including approximately 68,400 on routes to and from Delhi. In fact, the Indian capital was Vienna’s biggest Indian market. Elsewhere, the Indian carrier has suspended its four weekly flights between DEL and Copenhagen Airport (CPH), and three-weekly flights between Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar (ATQ) and London Gatwick Airport (LGW). According to Cirium schedule data, the Star Alliance member’s European seat capacity between November 2026 and March 2027 is down by approximately 12% compared with the same period a year earlier. Notably, its Delhi- Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) route has seen the sharpest reduction, around 50%. The airline has halved the frequency from 14 to seven weekly flights. Domestic Routes Shift To Air India Express Credit: WeChitra | Shutterstock As for its domestic network, most of the changes are not necessarily route cancelations. Instead, Air India has transferred several services to its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express. This is part of the broader restructuring of the airline under the ownership of the Tata Group, which took control of the former state-owned carrier in 2022. Route End month Delhi – Goa May 2026 Chennai – Madurai August 2026 Delhi – Aurangabad August 2026 Mumbai – Jamnagar August 2026 Hyderabad – Tirupati August 2026 Since the takeover, the group has consolidated its four airlines into two. Vistara was merged into Air India, while AirAsia India, subsequently renamed AIX Connect, was integrated into Air India Express. The restructuring has allowed the group to separate its full-service and low-cost operations, and several domestic routes previously served by the mainline carrier are now operated exclusively by its budget subsidiary.
