LEGENDARY trainer Aidan O’Brien has picked just ONE horse of 124 entered to help him land a £3.2million race he has never won. The Ballydoyle boss has a CV that will see him go down in history. Causeway, seen here beating Ancient Egypt at Royal Ascot, is Aidan O’Brien’s sole entry in the Caulfield Cup Credit: Getty But one race that doesn’t show among the many thousands he’s plundered is Australia’s Caulfield Cup. Run for more than £3m for the first time this year, O’Brien, who famously had a massive falling out with Melbourne Cup vets, has nominated one of his Ballydoyle battalion to go for it. Causeway is set to be his sole representative in the 1m4f race to be run at the track of the same name on October 17. Winner of the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, Causeway fluffed his lines completely when last seen in the Grand Prix de Paris. Sent off 3-1 under Ryan Moore, he finished seventh of seven as William Haggas’ St Leger and Arc hope Maltese Cross scythed through the field late under Tom Marquand. Prior to that, Causeway had won five races on the spin and his only defeat had been on debut at Gowran Park in September, when he finished behind subsequent Derby winner Christmas Day. O’Brien, who rocked punters this week when pulling a red-hot favourite from a York Ebor race, clearly rates the three-year-old colt but has described him as ‘lazy’. After his Royal Ascot win, the trainer said ‘it’s hard to know’ how big his engine is because he doesn’t do a whole lot in front. Most read in Horse Racing Causeway has been priced up at 50-1 with Bet 365. The horse also has entries in next month’s St Leger and Irish Champion Stakes, as well as October’s Champion Stakes at Ascot. O’Brien’s son Joseph has taken a different strategy and decided to throw a small army at Australia’s second biggest race. He has a whopping 15 entries, with Derby third James J Braddock leading the line at 20-1. Notable among the others he has decided to enter is last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Goodie Two Shoes. Owned by JP McManus, she won the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last time out and is 50-1 to take the warm-up contest for the ‘race that stops a nation’. Wine Dark Sea, who roared back to life with a Group 3 win at Newbury last week, has been entered by Harry Charlton and is also a 20-1 shout.
