The next Star Wars show, Ahsoka season 2, is all set to switch genres when it returns in 2027. Though Star Wars as a whole dabbles in several different genres at once, from space odyssey to Western to fantasy to samurai, the various Star Wars shows all have a more defined identity. While each Star Wars show occupies a different genre, they all focus on one genre in particular. Andor, for example, was a political and spy thriller through and through, while Skeleton Crew was a family-friendly adventure show. Some shows do dabble in multiple genres; The Clone Wars could switch from a kid-friendly adventure to a tragic and complicated look at the horrors of war on a dime. For the most part, however, Star Wars shows don't switch genres for more than a few episodes at a time. The fast-approaching Ahsoka season 2, which is set to premiere on Disney+ on January 20, was expected to continue that trend. Ahsoka season 1 was mainly focused on the franchise's samurai and sci-fi elements, and since the new season is directly building off the ending of Ahsoka season 1, it seemed like it would continue focusing on those genres. Now, however, it has become clear that Ahsoka season 2 is switching genres. Ahsoka Season 2 Is Shifting From Science Fiction To Science Fantasy As previously mentioned, Ahsoka season 1 was mostly interested in "hard" science fiction with samurai elements at play. After all, the entire season was about traveling beyond the borders of the Star Wars galaxy, and it got into a lot of technical elements like maps and the search for Peridea itself. The samurai side of the show should remain in the new season, but the hard sci-fi elements are being switched out for science fantasy. Ahsoka season 1, like Star Wars in general, had some fantasy elements from the beginning. The very concept of the Force is itself a fantasy element, and the show also had a focus on the Nightsisters of Dathomir, Force witches. Those fantasy elements are coming to the forefront of the new season, however, and there will be less of an emphasis on the technical aspects of Ahsoka, like extragalactic travel. Most of that change in genre is a product of how Ahsoka season 1 ended. There's no need to dive into the logistics of traveling between galaxies anymore, for example, because all the show's characters are where they need to be. Thrawn and Ezra are in the main galaxy, while Ahsoka, Sabine, Baylan, and Shin Hati are still on Peridea. Ahsoka season 1's main source of hard sci-fi isn't part of the show anymore. Additionally, half of Ahsoka season 2's story is deeply tied to science fantasy. Baylan Skoll is searching for the Mortis gods in the hopes of finding true balance in the Force, Ahsoka is trying to stop him, and Anakin's Force ghost is involved in it all just to add another layer of mysticism. The Great Mothers will also almost certainly be helping Thrawn with their magic, and he still has the zombie-like Night Troopers at his disposal. The trailer for Ahsoka season 2 has shown that the show's sophomore outing will be less interested in technical detail and more interested in big-picture reveals about the Force and the more fantastical elements of Star Wars. Ahsoka is trading in maps and a focus on space travel for witches, magic, necromancy, Force gods, and ghosts. That's about as fantastical as it gets, which is a change from the more grounded story of season 1. Ahsoka Season 2 Should Still Have Sci-Fi Elements At Play While Ahsoka season 2 is leaning further into science fantasy, that doesn't mean it's abandoning science fiction entirely. It is true that the story on Peridea will be much more overtly fantastical, the other half of the upcoming season — Grand Admiral Thrawn's attack on the New Republic — is still firmly in the realm of sci-fi, even counting his use of the Great Mothers and the Night Troopers. Upcoming Star Wars Movies & Shows Title Release Date Ahsoka Season 2 January 20, 2027 Star Wars: Starfighter May 28, 2027 Maul - Shadow Lord Season 2 TBA New Jedi Order TBA Simon Kinberg's Trilogy TBA Dawn of the Jedi TBA Star Wars: Visions Season 4 TBA As the trailer for season 2 already teased, Thrawn's battle with the New Republic is going to feature a lot of standard Star Wars fare. Naval battles between starships, combat based around blaster rifles, and Thrawn's brilliant military tactics and strategies. Ahsoka season 2 is bringing war back to the main Star Wars galaxy, and that means it will have to dive into the technical aspects of the franchise's military technology. Even as it leans further into fantasy, sci-fi will still be a factor. Release Date August 22, 2023 Network Disney+ Showrunner Dave Filoni
