When viewed through this lens, it's easy to see how characters like Tommy have connections to Sherlock Holmes, and by extension, the relationship that plays out between Tommy and Tuppence is clearly a playful and imaginative reinterpretation of the traditional Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson stories. The characters have complimenting skills and often bicker as they try to come to their conclusions and make sense of the facts as they are laid out before them. While Watson and Holmes occasionally cause one another some minor distress, they ultimately work as a spectacularly effective investigative team, which is mirrored in the relationship of Tommy and Tuppence, though there is a slight difference between the two couplings. Yes, Holmes & Watson Are Like A Married Couple (Sometimes) Tommy and Tuppence don't begin their story in a relationship. Yes, they have chemistry, and there is some flirting, but the connection initially stems from shared interests and a passion for detective work. But over time, this relationship blossoms, and the pair embrace a romantic element that continues to evolve in the later novels by Agatha Christie. Meanwhile, Holmes and Watson are never romantic in the original novels, though some other parodies lean into exploring a potential romance; but they do bicker like an old married couple and develop a shorthand that allows them to understand one another and recognize what their partner may be thinking before anyone else. In fact, the parody of Tommy and Tuppence exploring how much the lines can blur when working together on such intense cases feels like a way of addressing something that may never be explicitly expressed in the Sherlock Holmes stories, suggesting this line of work can lead to a bond that transcends traditional friendships or partnerships. But Tommy and Tuppence are more willing to lean into this line of thinking.
