After Nitin Nabin's team, BJP weighs big changes to its top decision body

The BJP is considering a reshuffle of its Parliamentary Board following Nitin Nabin's announcement of his new team. Find out (Photo-ITG)After Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Nabin announced his team, there is now speculation about the restructuring of the party's highest decision-making body, the Parliamentary Board, which currently has 12 members, including top leaders such as Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and JP Nadda.Under the BJP's constitution, the Parliamentary Board has the authority to recommend names for the posts of Prime Minister and chief ministers, take policy decisions, decide on political alliances and initiate disciplinary action.All its members are also mandatory members of the Central Election Committee, which makes the final selection of candidates for elections.The party president is the ex-officio chairperson of the Parliamentary Board, while the national general secretary (organisation), currently BL Santosh, serves as its secretary. According to the party constitution, the board can have a maximum of 11 members, including the president.While constituting the body, the party takes into consideration seniority as well as regional, caste and religious representation. The representation of chief ministers on the Parliamentary Board has a contentious history.In 2006, Rajnath Singh removed then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi from the board, though Modi was inducted again in 2013.In 2022, then party president JP Nadda removed then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former party president Nitin Gadkari from the board.The reasoning behind this is that since the Parliamentary Board selects chief ministers, having a serving chief minister on it could create a conflict of interest.Currently, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are among those being considered for a place on the board.Decision on the continued presence of former party presidents JP Nadda and Nitin Gadkari on the Parliamentary Board will also determine how many new members are inducted into the BJP's top decision-making body.Apart from the Parliamentary Board, the Central Election Committee, National Executive and National Council are also in the process of being reconstituted.The Election Committee includes members of the Parliamentary Board, along with leaders such as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the ex-officio president of the BJP Mahila Morcha.The 120-member National Executive is the party's main executive body, with mandatory minimum representation for women and members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
