A television producer who worked on Ricky Gervais’s After Life and Extras has been charged with rape and sexual assault. Charlie Hanson, 73, faces two charges relating to alleged offences against a woman in 2008 and 2010. Both were said to have taken place in London. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 2 October. The charges come five years after a letter was sent to Netflix – which was filming the third series of After Life at the time – and Bafta, detailing the woman’s allegations against Hanson. Netflix removed him from the crew of After Life and Bafta suspended his membership after receiving the letter. After learning of the charges, Hanson said this week: “I must emphasise that I strenuously deny the allegations. “Given that there are pending proceedings, it would not be right for me to engage in any comment as to this allegation and I am unable to say anything further at this stage.” He has previously said, while protesting his innocence, that he would co-operate fully with any formal investigation and was “appalled” by the “historical and false allegations”. Scotland Yard submitted a file to the Crown Prosecution Service in November 2024, and the CPS authorised charges on 14 August this year. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “A man has been charged as part of an ongoing sexual offences investigation.“In August 2020, the Met received a report of a rape which had allegedly been committed in London in May 2008. “Charlie Maurice Hanson, 73, has been charged with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault. The charges relate to alleged offences in 2008 and 2010 against one woman, who continues to be supported by specialist officers.” Hanson rose to prominence as a TV producer in the 1980s and 1990s, working on shows such as Desmond’s, The Big Impression and Birds of a Feather. He went on to produce the majority of Ricky Gervais’s TV and film projects following The Office. EXPLORE MORE ON THE TOPICS IN THIS STORY
