Adelaide suffered a devastating case of deja vu on Saturday night.Despite snapping their finals drought with an elimination-final victory, the Crows have once again ended a season with a brutal semi-final loss.The debate around Matthew Nicks's coaching tenure will rage throughout his contract year in 2027, but with the Lions, Hawks and Dockers all around a similar age profile, the question around South Australian water coolers this week will be: where to from here?Despite missing stars through the campaign, Adelaide arguably had their best 23 at the Gabba but conceded their biggest score in nine years, leaked a finals record five goals in the first seven minutes, and once again were punished out of centre bounce.Nicks conceded after the Gabba loss that the club still has plenty of work to do."We don't have many out at the moment so we were in a good position to have a crack at it … maybe tonight's a bit of a reality check," he said.The hope after last year's straight-sets exit was that the natural development of the Crows' young stars would help the side take the next step, and they certainly lived up to expectations.Sam Berry had a career-best season on ball, Brayden Cook made the wing his own, Dan Curtin was injected into the midfield in the final month, Lachlan McAndrew took the ruck reins, Wayne Milera had an All-Australian year, Josh Rachele kicked a career-high 42 goals, James Borlase became a defensive rock, and Izak Rankine was the most in-form player in the game after the bye period.But it still wasn't enough in September."Unfortunately tonight we found where our weaknesses are," forward Taylor Walker said after his final match.Adelaide vice-captain Alex Neal-Bullen told ABC News at Adelaide Airport on Sunday that the Crows were still chasing the top sides."Brisbane are what we're striving to become … the quality that they have and the brand of footy they brought — we just weren't able to compete with it," he said.So how do they take that next step when their star is retiring, and their list is stagnating?For years, Adelaide has chased an elusive extra superstar to help take the club to the next level, but their latest pursuit has ended in disappointment with Lion Zac Bailey joining a growing list of stars who have declined Adelaide's advances.The list includes Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Christian Petracca, Ryley Sanders and Zach Merrett.The Crows will enter the trade period with picks 13, 31, 37 and 49 and will need to fill the voids of departing defenders Jordan Butts and Nick Murray alongside the looming exit of young mid Luke Pedlar and the 35 goals kicked by the retiring Walker.Internally, the next wave of youth doesn't feel ready to be the side's solutions. First-round picks Sid Draper and Charlie Edwards were banished to the SANFL, averaging 17 and 22 touches respectively.First-year forwards Mitch Marsh and Archie Ludowyke look like future stars, combining for 27-goals in the state league, but are they ready to fill the Texan's boots?It will be a big off-season at West Lakes as they once again try to close the gap between them and a plethora of contenders who seem to be in a similar premiership window, but their coach remains optimistic that they are heading in the right direction."We have great forward momentum as a football club," he said."We're building something quite special [but] we're not there yet."
