Sign in to your ScreenRant account Status quos and character development are fickle in Marvel Comics, most of all in Spider-Man comics. Likewise, some characters may inevitably regress to their previous iconography or traditional traits, even if they had spent nearly a decade with a whole new personality and characteristics that challenged how stagnant their development had been in the past, though it can also be argued that new developments for classic Spider-Man characters aren’t always as successful or progressive as they could be. For instance, before Spider-Man tussled with the likes of Chameleon, Vulture, and Doctor Octopus, Marvel Comics’ J. Jonah Jameson was his first-ever arch-nemesis. Indeed, the mustached publisher of the Daily Bugle declares Spider-Man a “masked menace” as early as in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963), and now, literally 1002 issues later, Jonah is apparently returning to his “old tricks” after becoming quite close with Peter Parker. Marvel Is Making JJJ A Spider-Man Hater Again Jonah has been a supporter and friend of Spider-Man since Peter revealed his identity and had a heart-to-heart with him in Chip Zdarsky’s Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man run. The solicitation for The Amazing Spider-Man #1003, however, suggests that Jonah is back to hating Spider-Man and/or making libelous statements about the wall-crawler: SPIDER-MAN races to stop a deadly assassin, while a staunch enemy turned ally of the wall-crawler returns to his old tricks! But tensions are high in the aftermath of ARMAGEDDON as Mayor Cage’s office and Spidey’s new favorite buds, Damage Control, try to keep a lid on an NYC ready to boil over. We don’t yet know what transpires in The Amazing Spider-Man #1000–1002, aside from Spider-Man battling Ravage and Aunt May somehow finding herself at the center of it all. Therefore, it’s anyone’s guess as to why Jonah might suddenly decide to turn on Peter/Spider-Man, though it’s likely to do with whoever this assassin is and who they’ve assassinated. Not much has been done with Jonah since Nick Spencer’s run, anyway, but reverting him to his default settings is a retcon that will hopefully be earned, as well. JJJ Won’t Be The Only Ally-Turned-Enemy Surprisingly, it doesn’t seem as if this’ll be a misdirect, either. The solicitation for The Amazing Spider-Man #1004—being released in the same month, on November 25—reads as follows: NO STOPPING THIS ITSY-BITSY SPIDER! ITSY BITSY has some feedback for J. Jonah Jameson — SHUT UP and SHOVE OFF this mortal coil! While Spidey leaps into action to save JJJ, another friend flips and puts the wall-crawler between him and his revenge! This implies that not only does Jonah despise Spider-Man again (and Peter too, consequently), but that this hatred is reciprocated. It should be fascinating to learn what has driven a wedge between Jonah and Peter after such a long time spent being close with one another. Of course, it’s possible this could all be a red herring, maybe with Chameleon turning them against one another somehow, and it won’t stop Peter from trying to save Jonah. Either way, there’s also another friend of Spider-Man’s who is turning on him. Spider-Man joining the Avengers soon will surely eclipse whatever happens during the events of The Amazing Spider-Man’s upcoming milestone arc, and Peter’s life could be drastically changed thereafter. My guess, though, is that this is some sort of bait, and Peter and Jonah are working together to capture this assassin. The Amazing Spider-Man #1003 is scheduled to be released on November 11, 2026.
