After 84 Years, DC Permanently Reinvents Iconic Wonder Woman Lore

Published Nov 1, 2026, 12:14 PM EST Mark has been a comic book journalist for over 15 years and has interviewed comic book creators like Gail Simone and Caspar Wijngaard. And when he's not writing, he's working on beating his record of 1,200 comics read in a year. As classic a character as Wonder Woman is, her lore may have changed more than anyone. For instance, depending on the era when a comic book is published, Diana Prince could have been created with clay by her mother, Queen Hippolyta, or she could be the daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus. That’s only one of the examples, but there are many more. Another thing about lore is that it has to be upgraded. That goes for Amazons too. The Amazons may prefer horses to electric cars and older Greek garb over jeans and athleisure, but they aren’t foolish. They’re aware that some of their customs need to be upgraded to survive the world outside. In this case, the Amazons have gone from the Invisible Jet to something more sophisticated. Wonder Woman Introduces The Invisible Drone Wonder Woman No. 38; Writer: Tom King; Artist: Daniel Sampere; Colorist: Alejandro Sanchez The final story arc in Tom King’s run of Wonder Woman involves the Matriarch (real name Lyssa) coming to the present to confront Diana and the Amazons and steal her past self and Wonder Woman’s daughter Trinity. The Matriarch has all the strength of an Amazon, but that’s not her most dangerous weapon. She has John Stewart’s Green Lantern Ring (which she stole from his body after she killed him in the future). That makes her a major threat to anyone. Rather than fight someone with an advantage, the Amazons force the Matriarch to use her Green Lantern Power Ring to drain its power. How do they do that? They trick her into flying into the Invisible Drone. What does Nubia do after seeing the Lyssa fly directly into it? She delivers a well-placed quip. “Ah, the Invisible Drone. They never do see it coming.” Nubia immediately takes advantage of the situation and attacks the Matriarch. Normally, this wouldn’t be an easy fight for the Queen of the Amazons. It’s different here because Lyssa had just escaped the underworld while fighting a bunch of heroes she previously killed. That, combined with flying into the Invisible Drone, leads to Nubia defeating the Matriarch by cutting her ring finger off. Sadly, Lyssa’s father, the Sovereign, saves her as the issue ends. Are There More Invisible Weapons? The Invisible Jet and Drone aren’t the only unseen weapons. Themyscira is protected by an invisible, magical barrier that allows Paradise Island to remain hidden. During the DC Comics event Dark Nights: Metal, Wonder Woman created the Invisible Chainsaw. While it was created from pieces of the Invisible Jet, it still counts. Especially since it was a creative use of parts during a dire time. Combine that with the drone, and who knows what else the Amazons have in their back pockets. The Amazons don’t have the kind of technology that someone like Lex Luthor does, but they aren’t without resources. Besides getting help from the Justice League (if needed), it’s not as if they can’t make their way off the island and shop. Plus, they have access to magic that even Zatanna, DC's new Prime Magus, doesn’t. All the resources on and off Paradise Island, combined with their mystical might, mean readers haven’t seen the last of Themyscira’s Invisible ordnance and vehicles. There are a couple of issues left in Wonder Woman: The Wonder War, so anything is possible. In the next couple of issues, Diana, Nubia, and the other Amazons could enter battle with invisible arrows, gun turrets, and missiles. With the Sovereign and his minions preparing to attack, they’ll certainly need all the advantages they can get, translucent or otherwise.
