After 7 Years, Star Wars Officially Replaces Pedro Pascal As The Mandalorian

For the first time since The Mandalorian began in 2019, Star Wars has replaced Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin for a new special. Though the character's face is almost always hidden behind a Beskar helmet, Pedro Pascal very notably plays Din Djarin in The Mandalorian. While there have been several people to play Din Djarin, most notably stunt actors Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder, who are physically in the suit for much of the show, Pascal is still quite literally the face and voice of the character. Pascal has also been sporadically playing Din Djarin for seven years now. He provided the character's spoken voice lines for all three seasons of The Mandalorian and appeared without his helmet in several scenes, and he even had a cameo appearance in The Book of Boba Fett. Most recently, Pascal reprised the role in The Mandalorian and Grogu, which also included a prolonged fight sequence where Din did not have his helmet on. Recently, there has been some speculation about Pascal's future with Star Wars. After the box office failure of The Mandalorian and Grogu, the lack of news about The Mandalorian season 4 for three years now, and the slate of upcoming Star Wars movies not even having an opportunity for Din Djarin to appear, there's a chance Pascal won't play the character ever again. Now, in the midst of that uncertainty surrounding the role, Star Wars has recast Pedro Pascal in a new Mandalorian special. Pedro Pascal Doesn't Voice Din Djarin In LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian The new animated television special LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian recast Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin. The Disney+ animated special features Gavin Hammon, a prolific voice actor known for playing Beast in The Wolf Among Us and Kenny in Telltale's The Walking Dead, playing the titular Mandalorian. While LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is primarily a recap of the three seasons of The Mandalorian, it includes several new voice lines performed by Hammon instead of Pascal. Most notably, Pascal is one of the very few actors from The Mandalorian who didn't reprise their role for the LEGO special. Amy Sedaris, Temuera Morrison, Katee Sackhoff, Rosario Dawson, Giancarlo Esposito, and even Bill Burr and Timothy Olyphant, all returned to voice their respective characters. Pascal, Werner Herzog, Mark Hamill, Gina Carano, and Carl Weathers were some of the only actors who didn't return for the special. Weathers and Carano were absent for real-world reasons, namely Weathers' unfortunate passing and Carano's recently settled lawsuit against Disney. Disney and Lucasfilm haven't publicly addressed Pascal's absence, but it's safe to assume either scheduling conflicts or budgetary constraints are responsible. Still, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is now the first time Din Djarin has ever appeared on-screen in Star Wars without Pedro Pascal's voice accompanying him. Lateef Crowder and Brendan Wayne have technically played the character as well, but neither of the actors provided voice lines for Din in the past. Star Wars Has A Long History Of Recasting Actors For Animation While Gavin Hammon's casting in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is unprecedented for The Mandalorian, it's hardly unusual for Star Wars at large. Animated Star Wars shows, and especially LEGO Star Wars installments, constantly recast live-action actors with voice actors. None of the actors from the Star Wars prequel trilogy returned for The Clone Wars, for example, while Dee Bradley Baker has been voicing clones instead of Temuera Morrison for nearly two decades now. Mark Hamill did return to play Luke Skywalker in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, but even that was unexpected back in 2024. Star Wars overwhelmingly prefers using new voice actors for animated shows, likely due to their lower rates and more available schedules. Because Star Wars so often recasts live-action actors for animation, it's probably best to not read too far into Pedro Pascal's recasting in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian. As previously mentioned, Pascal likely had a scheduling conflict or asked too high a salary to appear in the animated show. While the future of The Mandalorian is still uncertain following The Mandalorian and Grogu, this LEGO special isn't an indication that the franchise is abandoning Pedro Pascal.
