The Midnight Sun animated TV show will fix one of Twilight's biggest mistakes by embracing a part of the book the film writers cut. The series has been in the works for around three years, but it's been mostly crickets when it comes to any real signs it’s moving forward. The original Twilight cast confirmed they won’t return, as the Cullen actors, minus Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, asked, but the creative team said no. However, we hadn’t otherwise heard any casting news or projected release dates to support this expansion of The Twilight Saga. Shows are announced all the time, then go into development hell, so those signals indicate they won’t fall through. Until some of those bigger steps, I stay a bit hesitant and try to keep my expectations tempered. That all changed in June 2026, when a casting call went out for Jacob and Billy Black, which What’s On Netflix verified. They’re looking for Indigenous actors to play the integral Quileute characters. They tentatively project filming to run from August 2026 to May 2027, which means that the very earliest we should expect a release is early 2028. Now that we finally have news about the show moving forward, it’s a great time to look back at what we know about the upcoming Midnight Sun series and get hyped. On Twilight's 20th anniversary, author Stephanie Meyer did a panel at the 2025 Twilight Forever in Forks festival, where she held a Q&A. Digital creator Amy Taylor—who goes by the username OhMyCarlisle and has focused on Twilight content for over a decade—attended the event and posted a recap on Instagram. One of the most exciting reveals is that Midnight Sun will learn from a controversial movie decision. The beloved blood-typing scene will be in the animated TV show. Netflix's Midnight Sun Will Include The Bloodtyping Scene From The Twilight & Midnight Sun Books The movie had to cut scenes to condense a 500-ish-page book into 2 hours, leading to multiple big changes to the Twilight book. Some changes went over fine. I'm pretty sure nobody cares that it was rainy instead of sunny at La Push. I'm also inclined to believe that the matching outfits aren't a big deal. That khaki skirt gets mocked almost as much as the CGI Renesmee. However, it's pretty widely agreed that the blood typing was one of the most painful removals, as it serves many narrative purposes. Twilight’s fifth chapter, “Blood Type,” shows that Edward cares so much for Bella that he can’t stay away even when it exposes him to his biggest temptation. I think it's also one of the first chapters where Edward really lets his guard down, allowing him and Bella to bond emotionally on a deeper level. The chapter also reveals Bella’s extreme sensitivity to blood. In Edward’s mind, this solidified that she wasn’t a normal human, even if he didn’t know how. The ability to smell blood also might not seem like an important detail, but it foreshadows the fact that she’ll eventually become a vampire, since vampires are also hypersensitive to the smell of blood. The blood typing scene also tears down many of Edward’s walls. The chapter piques Bella’s interest in why he wouldn’t want to do the blood typing class. He acted a little cagey about it. In my opinion, this primed her to believe that Edward was a vampire. She already had that foundational knowledge that he couldn’t be around blood. Plus, and this is probably the least important part of the scene, it also shows Mike getting annoyed by Edward, which is always funny. Since the movie was released, Twilight fans have been pretty upset at the cut, and they haven’t hidden their disappointment. Luckily, Meyer is pretty in tune with her fandom. She has been in the writers' room, having a hands-on role in scripting the series. And, at the 2025 festival, she confirmed the iconic scene will be in the animated TV show. What Else We Know About The Midnight Sun TV Show INFphoto.com While the blood-typing scene is the most exciting detail we have about the Midnight Sun TV show, we know more. Netflix gave Midnight Sun a straight-to-series order, which will appeal to actors because it skips the risk of committing to a project that has to survive the pilot process. In August, Meyer’s team teased Midnight Sun updates on Fickle Fish Films, which haven’t arrived yet but are worth looking forward to. The writers' room started working in February 2025. Nexus Point News confirmed that it includes Sinead Daly, the lead writer and executive producer; Liz Sczudlo, who worked on Dynasty; Garrett Lerner, who worked on The Good Doctor; Vanessa Rojan, who worked on The Summer I Turned Pretty; and Rebecca Roanhorse, who worked on Echo. Meyer has been directly involved. Aside from that, Meyer shared more about the story in the same 2025 Twilight Forever in Forks Q&A. We’ll see more of James and more of Peter the Nomad in the TV show, which could prove interesting. There’s a lot more to know about James, as he’s pretty mysterious in the books. Additionally, Peter is a fan-favorite character, so it would be fun to get more of the character. It seems there will be other new things in the story that weren’t in the Twilight books, which folks should feel more comfortable with since Meyer is involved in those decisions.
