Additional rice supplies planned if prices go up during Onam, says Kerala Minister Anoop Jacob

An additional supply of 25,000 metric tonnes of rice will be made available in the Kerala market if rice prices go up during the Onam season, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Anoop Jacob said on Sunday. The government has written to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) seeking its cooperation with regard to the additional supplies. At present, 1,65,932 metric tonnes of rice and 24,506 metric tonnes of wheat are available for public distribution. These supplies are adequate for curbing the rise in prices during the festival season, Mr. Jacob said. There is also good response to the rice supplied under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS), he added. The Minister also swept aside reports that the price of rice sold through the public distribution system had risen from ₹10.9 per kg to ₹26 as “false propaganda.” The State government has not reduced the quantum of rice eligible to ration card holders. There is also no change in the prices, he said. Published - August 16, 2026 08:02 pm IST
