Acrisure Stadium will have a quick turnaround this weekend

Published October 30, 2026 12:31 PM When Heinz Field opened in 2001, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pitt Panthers became roommates. Or, more accurately, partners in a timeshare. The Panthers use it several times a year. The Steelers use it several times a year. Sometimes, they use it on back-to-back days.More rarely, the turnaround is very quick. On Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, Pitt hosts Georgia Tech. On Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET, the Steelers host the Browns. It will be plenty of work to convert the venue now known as Acrisure Stadium from its Pitt configuration to being Steelers-ready. It will put extra stress on the playing surface. Last year, there were constant concerns about the quality of the grass; Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers at one point called it “borderline unplayable.” A change in the construction of the field has caused those worries to subside in 2026.Still, this weekend’s schedule cuts it as close as it ever will be cut.The Pitt game could have started earlier, obviously. The Steelers game potentially could have been moved later, but the league decided (after considering flexing the game between the 5-2 Browns and 5-2 Steelers to prime-time in place of the game between the 2-5 Eagles and 1-4-1 Commanders) to keep the game at 1:00 p.m. ET.Situations like this will be unavoidable whenever a college team and a pro team play their home games in the same building. Last year, former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said Pitt should move out. That’s how it was from 1970 through 2000, when the Steelers played at Three Rivers Stadium and Pitt played at Pitt Stadium. (Before Three Rivers opened, the Steelers split time between Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field.)Steelers owner Art Rooney II hasn’t ruled out ditching grass altogether for artificial turf, if the current experiment doesn’t work. This weekend, the new field will be put to its biggest test yet.
