ABVP, Left-leaning student groups clash on Jadavpur University campus

Left-leaning groups, however, accused the ABVP of bringing outsiders into the campus and indulging in vandalism.KOLKATA: A clash broke out between members of the ABVP and Left-leaning student groups at Jadavpur University early on Thursday, with both sides accusing each other of bringing outsiders onto the campus, varsity sources said.According to news agency PTI, several students were injured in the clash, with some being taken to a hospital for treatment, the sources said.The confrontation reportedly began over a general meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students' Union (FETSU) on Wednesday and continued late into the night, a university source said.Amid the escalating tension, Jadavpur University's administrative building, Aurobindo Bhavan, was locked, while groups of students gathered outside the premises.University sources said fires were also allegedly set at several locations on the campus in the early hours of Thursday.Videos circulating in students' social media groups showed several people raising slogans and attempting to enter locked university buildings.Both groups have accused each other of bringing people from outside the university onto the campus.RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that members of the Left student organisations, including the SFI and DSO-DSF, had started confrontations under the cover of the FETSU meeting.Left-leaning groups, however, accused the ABVP of bringing outsiders into the campus and indulging in vandalism.ABVP functionary Shubhabrata Adhikari alleged that several people from outside the university were involved in the attack and FIRs were being lodged.He also said members of the organisation had gathered outside the Jadavpur Police Station in protest.Left student groups denied the allegations and accused the ABVP of trying to enter and take control of university spaces.DSO leaders alleged that flags were removed and fires were set during the confrontation.The ABVP announced a protest on the university campus on Thursday over the incident.Meanwhile, the SFI announced a protest rally at the 8B bus stand near the university during the day, its state committee member Subhajit Sarkar said.Do you think the university administration handled the situation adequately?Yes, they acted promptlyNo, they should have intervened earlier3k+ users shared opinion today 5k+ users already voted today Share Opinion(With agency inputs)
