‘Absurd Blockade’: Fresh Parliamentary Deadlock Pushes Kosovo Back Into Crisis Mode

This Tuesday, Avni Dehari entered Kosovo’s parliament – but not for the task he is formally entrusted with. The 79-year-old MP from the ruling Vetevendosje party is parliament’s provisional speaker, as its oldest member, tasked with moderating the inaugural session of the Assembly until MPs vote on a permanent speaker. Parliament is stuck again in apparent deadlock, with Dehari’s party refusing to submit a name for the speaker, as it first demands an agreement with other parties on the election of a new President of Kosovo. Parliament’s rules require him to invite the MPs to a session every 48 hours until they elect a speaker.
