Sign in to your ScreenRant account With The Rookie season 9 coming during ABC's 2026-2027 mid-season, a disappointing update about one of the show's most established couples makes it even more clear why the pair is problematic. Throughout the run of The Rookie, viewers have had the chance to weigh in on their favorite romances, although the show has never entirely been about the Mid-Wilshire team's personal relationships. As John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) has worked his way up the ranks within the LAPD, both him and those surrounding him have had several different relationships, keeping romance alive and well as The Rookie has continued to flourish. Throughout the last few seasons, the majority of relationships on the show have solidified. From Nolan himself finally marrying his longtime love Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) during The Rookie's 100th episode to Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) and Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore) welcoming their second child, the show's established couples have been through major changes. Meanwhile, others like Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) have been finding their footing, with The Rookie season 8 finale finally seeing the long-term slow burn get engaged, ending their seasons long will they/won't they dynamic. The show's most difficult couple, however, has fluctuated over the past few seasons. Despite having much less to do than in past seasons, Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) and her husband, James Murray (Arjay Smith) remained one of the most difficult pairs to watch, and The Rookie season 9 seems like it won't offer much to change their tough dynamic moving forward. The Rookie Season 9 Will Keep Nayla & James Together In a recent chat with Cox, Matt Mitovitch confirmed on Matt's Inside Line that James and Nyla's marriage is holding strong during The Rookie season 9. While Cox revealed the disappointing news that the couple won't be separated in the coming season, she did tease that things may not be easy between the pair when the series comes back to ABC. Sharing the couple will be facing an "obstacle" that they're working to overcome as a couple, Cox did reveal that whatever's coming for the pair "causes Nyla to make some 'interesting' decisions." While that may mean things are getting complicated for Nyla, it keeps her marriage to James firmly in view. Throughout their time together on The Rookie, James and Nyla's relationship has always been a struggle. First meeting during The Rookie season 3, James' values didn't align with Nyla's from the very beginning of their relationship, and though they have similar overall goals with their work, their paths to get there are completely incompatible. James, who works as an advocate for the community and is often against Nyla's work specifically, has had tough moments in the rocky relationship, while Nyla has often struggled to figure out how to keep the pair's blended family together despite the drama surrounding them consistently. Why Nayla & James Are The Rookie's Most Toxic Couple Despite the fact that the pair have been married since The Rookie season 4, James and Nyla's relationship has been rocky at best for the duration of their time together on the show. With their overall ideals consistently struggling to mesh, the pair haven't been able to see eye to eye over the course of the last few seasons. While their relationship with Angela and Wesley seems to keep them balanced to a degree, James and Nyla's confrontations over her work being the antithesis to everything he believes are consistent and unending, without much progress made when they do discuss things. Though the tension between the couple often keeps them fighting for their relationship, it also makes it clear that there are fundamental differences in their marriage that they simply haven't found a way to work through. With both James and Nyla having struggled with focusing on each other in the past, the pair's conflicts never truly seem to be resolved, despite how often they try to work through their problems. With Nyla being one of The Rookie's strongest characters, it's difficult to see her in a relationship where she doesn't always feel respected in the ways she should be.
