The comedy generated a fantastic $42.9 million at the global box office and became a rare summer comedy hit despite competition from blockbusters The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With the total comprising $24 million domestically and $18 million overseas, the comedy has yet to be released in European markets like Spain, France, and Sweden. The hit movie is a remake of Cesc Gay's 2020 Spanish movie, The People Upstairs. In the dysfunctional movie, a couple whose marriage is on the rocks invites their free-spirited neighbors over for a dinner party. However, their conversation spirals into an offer for something more intimate. The Invite's Box-Office Success Is Justification For Nearly Going Straight To Streaming The box-office success is due to word-of-mouth and critical acclaim. The Invite reviews praised Will McCormack and Rashida Jones' script, Wilde's sharp and balanced direction, and phenomenal performances from the quartet cast of Seth Rogen, Wilde, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton. In addition, the movie takes place in a single location, allowing for a tense yet funny interaction between the two couples as the dynamic shifts when the twist unveils. We have to fight for it. It’s a bribe. They pay you more. Not the filmmaker, no; the financiers will get a lot more money to go to streaming, and you can take that bribe and give that up if that’s where your priorities lie. But we were really lucky that our financier gave me the opportunity to make this decision, which is something I don’t take lightly.
