A ‘pay-optional’ lesbian bar is embroiled in a popcorn-worthy viral drama

One lesbian bar has currently gone viral – for all the wrong reasons (Picture: Getty Images) The city of Northampton, Massachusetts, is often described as ‘Lesbianville, USA.’ The pink and red flags hang from LGBTQ+ bars across town; a universal symbol of a sapphic haven. Just down the road, though, in the city of Greenfield, there’s only one lesbian bar. And it’s currently embroiled in an internet-shaking dispute over a teeny, tiny change in policy on a Saturday night. The Last Ditch only opened its doors last year, but at the very centre of its business ethos is inclusivity. So, despite opening years after the Covid pandemic first hit the world, the bar had one very strict rule: patrons must wear face masks. The Last Ditch’s website says: ‘Masks are required when not actively taking a sip of your drink or taking a bite of a snack. ‘Lower, sip, and lift! We keep KN95 and N95 masks available at our door in case you forget yours. Some events will not allow eating or drinking to provide a Covid safer environment. ‘Anyone who simply refuses without engaging in a good faith conversation to reach an accommodation will be asked to leave the space if necessary and provided with an opportunity to engage in an accountability process if deemed appropriate.’ The Last Ditch also believes no one should be turned away for not being able to afford their cover charge, a policy which includes ‘unhoused people.’ The Guardian has pointed out that while this is ‘very generous,’ it’s ‘also a formula for losing money.’ It’s a fair point. Fast forward to 2026, and the community is tearing itself apart because the owners have changed their policy on masks in a bid to, well, actually make a profit. And now, TikTokers have collectively pulled up their chairs to watch the infighting unfold. The venue has now announced that Saturdays will become ‘mask-optional,’ and this didn’t go down with many members of the local LGBTQ+ community. It was casually included on a poster promoting a new club night, which many critics took as too flippant, failing to address the issue with the care it deserved. As a now-viral article in The Boston Globe reported, one commenter wrote, ‘just say you’re being complicit in a mass disabling event and get it over with,’ while another said, ‘I hope your venue gets firebombed for robbing my fellow immunocompromised people of their Saturday plans just to scrape extra revenue from ablists [sic].’ There were some 400 comments in the end, many of which were accusing the venue of failing to take the Covid pandemic seriously. This is in spite of the fact Greenfield hasn’t seen a single reported Covid case for two months. A subsequent statement from the bar said it was ‘sorry to disappoint valued community members with access changes by a casual announcement’. It added that its ‘diverse disabled immunocompromised team makes sense by multiple open-community meetings, feedback form review, and advice from intersectional business advisors/elders’. Still, that wasn’t good enough. There was backlash to this, too, as many criticised the institution for failing to include alt-text. ‘The story of the year’ Ever since, the internet hasn’t been able to look away. Now, it’s worth noting that the owners of this lesbian bar don’t deserve to be vilified for arguably trying to do something good: support disabled people in need of community. And that’s becoming increasingly rare. Critics have also argued that the story is, in some respects, being whisked up in right-wing circles as symbolic of the left being utterly ridiculous. Really, in its original policy, the bar was just trying to be inclusive of immunocompromised people, six years after the pandemic. Needless to say, one TikToker has labelled the saga the ‘story of the year.’ And many LGBTQ+ people have been joining in on the discourse. Over on Reddit, @nfounder said ‘the difference between gay bars and lesbian bars is so funny. Just absolute queer chaos and debauchery vs absolute queer order and restriction’. Meanwhile, @chicitygirl93 alleged they ‘got blocked for saying it’s complicated and we need nuance cause bars need $$$.’ On TikTok, @alyssanoelx said ‘can these people lay low, it’s almost the midterms,’ while @Cootpunch joked ‘the mask lesbian community, not to be confused with the masc lesbian community.’ What do you do think of masks in 2026?
