The launch of EA Sports FC 27 is just around the corner, so let's take a look at everything new coming to the ever-popular FUT mode, as well as the features that we know will return. While FC 27 is expected to be one of EA's tentpole titles for the year, as it is every year, there feels like a much greater weight of expectation on FC 27 because of player dissatisfaction that has been building for almost a decade. Players feel like they're being sold the same text in different fonts every year, and the culmination of this is FC 27 being a title that many will say they aren't buying. In response, EA has overhauled its most popular game mode, so let's see just how big the changes are and what is staying the same. Major Changes Coming To FUT In FC 27 In this section, I'm going to run through what I feel are the biggest changes coming to FUT in FC 27. These are changes, tweaks, additions, or removals that categorically change the game or how we interact with the game mode. Streamlined SBCs The thought of changing SBCs at all is a little scary, as they've been a core part of the gameplay cycle for a very long time, but the proposed changes seem positive on paper. Streamlined SBCs are based on a point-scoring system rather than trying to meet criteria such as a minimum team overall or chemistry number, as well as other awkward objectives such as nationality or league-based challenges. Instead, an SBC will have a score assigned to it that you must meet, and you simply select players from your Club or Duplicates to achieve the target score. Each card will have a value assigned to it, and this value is increased with the quality and rarity of the card. What this ultimately means is that all SBCs become about the level of sacrifice you're willing to make to complete it. You may be faced with an SBC that demands a score of 300, and you could either put up 30 bronze cards worth 10 points, 15 silver cards worth 20 points, or 10 gold cards worth 30 points. These new SBCs will still have some restrictions; the one shown off in the FUT deep dive says that cards must be rated between 65 and 75, but that is the only restriction in place. Increased Rewards While EA released a huge document with all the exciting new changes coming to FUT, the one that stands out to me most is the improved rewards for each match played. You will now receive more coins and season points after every match, meaning the process of grinding to upgrade your team is being addressed head-on. More FUT coin rewards and tradable packs are also being brought in for a greater diversity of rewards. Overall, the intent behind these changes is to shift the focus away from weekly rewards, which inherently encourage a grind given the effort needed to earn them and how infrequently they are delivered. Instead, more rewards are being moved to what EA is calling "End of Match Rewards." If taken at face value, this suggests that more rewards are being delivered at the end of a game in real time rather than waiting until certain objectives are hit, or a weekly reset comes around. The flexibility of the rewards is to offer a greater sense of accomplishment and allows for more opportunities to build, expand, or grow your team without feeling like you have to grind SBCs or pump real money into the game via FC points. Fewer Promo Squads & Adjusted Overalls Another huge change coming to FC 27 is the reduction of promo or campaign squads that will go live during the life of the game. There will be five fewer promo squads in total, which might not seem too significant, but that means there will be at least 10 weeks without an active promo in the game. This breathing space should help the meta balance out much more, and will hopefully mean that the overall squad ability curve isn't broken after just a few weeks. Another change that will aid this is the reduction in the gap between the best and worst players in a campaign. For far too long, we've sat and packed a promo player only for it to be the worst of the entire squad, which then leaves a sour taste in our mouths. In FC 27, the gap between the best and worst players of a promo team is going to be significantly smaller, and the squads themselves will also be smaller when possible. Galleries Galleries are being added to FUT in FC 27, and this is a mix of features from other popular sports game modes across the likes og NBA 2K and EA's NHL franchise. A gallery is a space for you to place cards you've earned throughout your time in FUT, and these are built around certain conditions such as leagues or nationalities. You can start filling a gallery with players of any level; then, when a gallery is full, you have it graded to earn a score and will earn rewards based on the total score it earns. Crucially, you can revisit galleries at any time to upgrade the items you have there, such as removing bronze players and replacing them with silver, gold, or even special card rarities. If you do this, you can then regrade the gallery to earn a higher score to try and claim the remaining rewards. This is a brand-new way to earn rewards from cards that typically just sit in your collection gathering dust, and it gives you more reason to keep playing games and earning more rewards to then upgrade your galleries and improve those rewards. It may seem a little like an endless cycle of just playing games to earn rewards and marginally improve various aspects of your team and collection, but that's kinda the point; only this year it's less of a grind, and there are more ways to earn those rewards and keep improving your team. The gameplay cycle remains the same, but the satisfaction involved is greater while the time required to do it all is much lower. Single-Player Changes Big changes are coming to the single-player FUT content in FC 27, including the introduction of new Live Events, some of which may have dynamic difficulty, and themed AI opponents, giving greater variety to the squads you come up against to keep gameplay feeling fresh and interesting for longer. As for the changes to difficulty options, it appears as though these will be unchanged for Squad Battles, but during some of the Live Events, dynamic difficulty will be introduced. This will see the difficulty between games increased in settings such as a knockout tournament, similar to how it is handled in single-player draft modes. It's another step towards making rewards feel truly earned and less of a repetitive grind. Card Rarities Card rarities have been removed for base bronze, silver, and gold cards, meaning there is no longer a strange divide between rare and common cards, which often felt very cosmetic, with it having little impact on the game beyond SBC requirements. This means that packs no longer have rarity guarantees, but the pack opening experience is expected to be similar to FC 26 in terms of the overall ratings you'll pull. One thing that isn't changing, however, is the fact that players of the same overall rating have different pull percentages. This means that while there may be 100 players with an overall rating of 82, more desirable players (ones with meta stats like pace or strength, or those with better chemistry opportunities) will have a lower pull rate than others. Other Changes Of Note In FC 27 FUT Mode There are a ton of other changes coming to FUT in FC 27, but they're either far less impactful on paper or don't relate hugely to the core gameplay experience, so we're going to reel those changes off below. Cards now have a holographic rarity that has a unique appearance compared to the typical version of the card, which may include a player signature. Evolutions may now have a pathway that lets you pick which stats to improve with each stage. It's also getting easier to preview an Evolution pathway for a player before you commit to applying an Evolution. Players are limited to three PlayStyle+ items compared to five in FC 26. All special items released in FC 27 will receive Role++ familiarity for all roles they can play. PlayStyles Lab is returning. Items will appear in your Gallery over time, reflecting the journey your club has gone on. With no major changes announced to the lineup of game modes within FC 27, although certain changes have been hinted at during the deep dive, this is the expected lineup of game modes within FUT.
