Marvel Zombies: War Zone has been moving at a breakneck pace in its first couple of issues, and, being nearly halfway finished already, it’s incredible that it’s been able to pack in as much heartfelt emotion as it has, while also being wholly action-packed. For instance, issue #2 is by no means less action-heavy than issue #1, but with twice as much heartstring-tugging. This is especially poignant in the context of War Zone being a Marvel Zombies comic book miniseries, wherein Frank Castle’s Punisher is the perfect protagonist. Frank’s wife and children weren’t feasted on by zombies or turned into zombies themselves in this original, alternate universe, but Marvel Zombies: War Zone still took this as a lovely opportunity to give Frank a nightmare where they had been. Sadly, for Jess and her loved ones, this is a reality they must live with, and the meat of issue #2 centers around what a profound loss she was at the beginning of the Hunger outbreak on the island of Manhattan. Luke Cage’s Power Man, Danny Rand’s Iron Fist, and Jack O’Lantern nearly murder Frank when they come across him in Marvel Zombies: War Zone #2, preemptively believing that he might be one of Gorgon’s Hunger minions. When they see that his blood is red, not green, he’s taken care of in a makeshift infirmary by Linda Carter’s Night Nurse. This is how Frank learns that, since the outbreak began three weeks ago, a community of survivors had accumulated in Harlem. And, in that startlingly quick amount of time, this community had already suffered a tremendous amount of loss. A flashback/memory told from Luke’s perspective in Marvel Zombies: War Zone #2 reveals that Jess was one of the first characters bitten when the zombified Hand ninjas first crawled up out of the sewers and attacked. Everything happens basically within a split-second—a Hand ninja shatters its teeth on Luke’s arm, demonstrating that Luke’s unbreakable skin is indeed immune to the Hunger cabal’s bites, though Misty Knight and Colleen Wing aren’t as fortunate. Danielle Cage, Jess and Luke’s daughter, takes refuge in a car as the horde overwhelms them all. Before Luke realizes that Jess had been bitten on the arm, Dani shouts, “Daddy! Somethin’s wrong with mommy.” The zombification process also apparently takes mere moments, as Jess has fully turned by the time Luke turns around, baring her teeth as she growls, “So… hungry…” The flashback ends here, but the story’s present-day events unveil more about her tragic fate. As Frank, Luke, and Danny fight Zombie Colleen and Zombie Misty, Danny implicitly admits having had to put Zombie Jess down when he has his fiery fist held up at Colleen, saying, “Dammit, Colleen. I… I can’t. Not again.” This suggests that Luke maybe couldn’t go through with killing Zombie Jess himself, or that Danny offered to do it so that Luke wouldn’t have to. Either way, dialogue between Danny and Luke implies that Danny blames himself for not being able to save her from being turned, feels remorse for being the one who had to kill her, or perhaps has survivor’s guilt for still being alive after Zombie Colleen bit his arm. Fortunately for Danny, Frank was there to swiftly chop his infected arm off, and Danny remained conscious long enough to brilliantly cauterize his own wound). It’s neat that Jessica Jones’ death was given this much ceremony, as the same cannot be said for many of the other iconic Marvel characters who’ve become a Hunger zombie and been slain thus far.
