A $349 Status Match Could Unlock American Airlines Flagship Lounges—Even In Coach, But There’s A Timing Catch

Philippine Airlines just launched a status match program. That may be surprisingly useful to U.S. frequent flyers who never travel with the airline, although they’re making a real push into the United Status. You can redeem American, Alaska and Qatar Airways miles for travel on Philippine Airlines, and they offer some of the best business class award availability to Asia. Philippine Airlines is joining oneworld and that should happen before the end of next year. Once they do, Philippine Airlines Mabuhay Miles Premier Elite members will be entitled to oneworld lounge access, when traveling on a oneworld airline. That includes Alaska Airlines Clubs, American Airlines Admirals Clubs, and American Airlines Flagship lounges (even when flying American on a domestic flight in economy). I regularly use my Royal Jordanian elite status to use American’s Flagship lounges before and after domestic flights. I just stopped into their Dallas lounge for dinner after flying in from Austin. Air Canada 50K and above matches to Premier Elite. So does Air France Gold (I have this via BIlt Platinum). Delta, United and Frontier Gold, Southwest A-List Prefered and JetBlue Mosaic 3 and higher match to Premier Elite. They’re charging a quite significant $349 for status matches to Premier Elite, and there’s no guarantee of how many months Philippine Airlines will be in oneworld while the match lasts – status matched now runs through February 2028. They could integrate early, or there could be a delay. So I’m not sure I’d suggest jumping on this. But I love to see them matching in the U.S. market and I hope they continue. What I’d really love is for this offer to continue or to run again before they enter oneworld – perhaps next summer – with status through February 2029. I’d definitely consider that worth the $349 investment – it’s a lot cheaper than a club membership, or membership bundled with a premium credit card, and those don’t come with Flagship lounge access. And the Flagship lounges are getting better! (Philippine Airlines or other oneworld status will not gain access to Flagship Dining, however.)
