United Airlines recently unveiled a wide range of new routes, most of which link its hubs in the eastern US to cities in Europe. Notably, about half of these new additions will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR, with these five new routes among the first long-haul corridors where the carrier will deploy the jet. Their topblock times will be around nine hours. The bulk of this growth is centered around Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), although one of the routes does also originate in Washington DC. Flyers on this route will enjoy daily connections on the A321XLR from April 26, with United as the only US carrier serving Toulouse nonstop. As far as this route's maximum block time is concerned, it can be found, as will be the case with all the corridors covered in this article, on the westbound return leg, in this case flying from Toulouse back to Washington, DC. In this direction, the duration tops out at nine hours and ten minutes, based on current scheduling data from Google Flights. United's SVP Global Network Planning and Alliances Patrick Quayle spoke about the carrier's new routes. "We've added flights to nearly 60 new international cities in the last decade, building a global network with the breadth and reach to set travel trends and inspire even the most discerning travelers to discover somewhere new." Four Newark Additions Credit: Shutterstock When Air Canada began planning its transatlantic operations with the A321XLR, it initially targeted Palma de Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands as an early destination. However, the carrier ultimately swapped the type for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, reportedly citing concerns about the A321XLR's performance in the Spanish heat. Despite this, two of United's four new A321XLR routes from Newark will serve cities in Spain. One of these, Ibiza, is in the same archipelago as Mallorca. The carrier will begin flying the type four times a week from Newark to Ibiza from May 31, with a top westbound block time of nine hours and 15 minutes. Meanwhile, thrice-weekly flights from Newark to Valencia on the Spanish mainland will commence on June 2 using the A321XLR, topping out at nine hours flying west. Indeed, on June 4, it will begin flying the type to Marseille daily, with a top westbound block time of nine hours and 15 minutes. Finally, daily A321XLR flights from Newark to Luxembourg will begin on April 2, topping out at eight hours and 50 minutes flying west. What's It Like Onboard?
