This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.9-1-1 season 10 is kicking off with a volcanic eruption in downtown Los Angeles. The 9-1-1 season 9 premiere involved a meteor shower and the LAPD's Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) and firefighter Henrietta "Hen" Wilson (Aisha Hinds) going to space. These storylines and the promotional material received significant attention on social media, including from those outside the fandom, with comparisons to when the Fast and Furious franchise went to space and how the procedural escalates the scale of its disasters. Now, the new 9-1-1 season 10 trailer opens with someone calling the emergency hotline because they are "trapped in a river of lava!" Meanwhile, emergency vehicles race toward a volcano in the middle of the city as ash and lava spew from it and form the numbers 9-1-1 on the ground. The song "Lava" by the B-52s can also be heard in the background and the caption reads, "This is ash-tounding." Check out the trailer below: 9-1-1 co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear shared with Entertainment Weekly that season 10's first disaster initially seems as though it is a sinkhole, which he was already planning before a real sinkhole opened up in the city earlier this month. However, “Our sinkhole isn’t just a sinkhole. It turns into something else entirely: We’re going to erupt a volcano in downtown L.A.” Minear revealed that this is inspired by the 1997 disaster film Volcano, but clarified that "Athena does not need Charlton Heston. Or any damn man." Since Athena is a police detective after the season 9 finale, the showrunner explained that it is easier to have her involved in disasters like the volcanic eruption: “We used to have to bend over backward to justify her involvement in something. Now she’s justified because she’s carrying that badge on her belt.” In addition to Athena and Hen, 9-1-1 season 10 is bringing back plenty of other familiar emergency responder characters, including Captain Howard "Chimney" Han (Kenneth Choi), Evan "Buck" Buckley (Oliver Stark), Edmundo "Eddie Diaz" (Ryan Guzman), and Maddie Buckley (Jennifer Love Hewitt). It was recently revealed that fan-favorites Eddie and Maddie will share a scene together for the first time in the show's history. The series continues to move forward after the divisive death of 9-1-1 original character Captain "Robert" Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) in season 8. Chimney became the new captain of LAFD Station 118 and will continue to serve in that position in season 10. Krause is now starring in NBC's new series Line of Fire, which is centered on a family of law enforcement officers, who have deadly case that turns into a dangerous conspiracy. More to come...
