He's been building PCs since young, and when not creating content, you can often find him inside a chassis somewhere. Have you ever looked at the internal USB headers on your motherboard and wondered what you can connect to them? These headers come in a few flavors. We have the older USB 2.0 headers, slightly newer USB 3.0 headers, and a USB-C port on modern motherboards. It's not uncommon to now find all three present on the PCB, so what can you use them for? Aside from front panel I/O, here are some things you can plug into your motherboard. RGB and fan controllers Create the ultimate light show Ready to give Tomorrowland a run for its money for lighting effects? You'll need an ARGB controller hub. Many cases may come with one, especially if they have ARGB components such as fans or lighting strips. Other components can come with support for this standard, including AIO liquid coolers. These are excellent for synchronizing all the lighting effects, and when controlled by your UEFI software, the results are brilliant. AIO liquid coolers Keep everything under control This one is fairly obvious if you've ever installed an all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooling kit inside a PC. The pump is either controlled or powered through its USB connection, depending on the hardware. This then connects to whatever software and drivers need to be present to manage the lighting and cooling performance, though many AIO kits allow the pump to be controlled through a fan header. Internal USB hubs I heard you liked USB ports? What if you run out of USB ports or headers? That's where USB hubs and splitters come into play! If you need more ways to connect more hardware to your motherboard, a USB hub is the way to go. You could even argue the front panel I/OI is nothing more than a glorified USB hub with a few ports that are usually easier to access. Trusted Platform Module (TPM) Keep it secret. Keep it safe. The TPM is a small device connected to a motherboard that provides secure functions for safeguarding data. You'll often find these devices used for managing cryptographic keys for Windows BitLocker encryption, Secure Boot, digital rights management (DRM), and other functions. Microsoft made TPM 2.0 a requirement with Windows 11, and while motherboards often come with it via the CPU (fTPM), you can find USB-powered solutions available. The Oculus Rift CV1 came with multiple USB-A connectors, and some owners preferred using internal USB adapters to make them work with motherboard headers. The same goes for the Meta Quest 2 and 3, though this requires the motherboard's USB-C header to a female port connection. It's an interesting way to rely on these internal connections rather than external USB ports. Bluetooth from Wi-Fi NICs Get all your devices online Some wireless cards that can be installed on your motherboard may have a USB connector that can be linked to one of your free headers. This often handles Bluetooth for the PCI expansion card since the Bluetooth part of the device uses a USB interface. Doing so will allow your PC to not only connect to your wireless network for cable-free online browsing, but also link up with all your Bluetooth-capable accessories. Figure out what's wrong One feature that should be present on every motherboard is a debug LCD showing an error code that can aid with troubleshooting failed boots. This isn't always the case, and many boards (some even more expensive options) come with a few LEDs, which the manufacturer believes to be good enough. What's worse are motherboards with no debugging at all. Thankfully, some handy tools can help. It's possible to purchase a motherboard debug USB tool that can connect to a free header on the PCB and aid you in checking why the POST seems to be failing. Digital power supplies See how your PSU is performing Did you know some digital power supplies allow you to connect to the PSU from within a booted operating system?
