He has worked in tech, as a musician, and in journalism with a well-rounded knowledge base of pop-culture throughout the eras. He claims that he has memorized the entire Internet Movie Database, and to date no one has been able to refute this. Holding a Bachelor's Degree in Religion and Culture from Wilfrid Laurier University, Karlis loves to examine the intersections of popular science-fiction and culture. His latest novel MASS. is available now on Amazon and examines a world where obesity has become a federal crime. Mystery movies include some of the most successful films of all time, and these ones, prominently featuring creatures big and small, are among the strongest. Surprisingly, some of the best detective movies feature animals in one way or another, with stories like The Hound of the Baskervilles being among the most beloved Sherlock Holmes adventures. Detective stories have been huge lately, with and without animals. Movies like the Knives Out franchise have been tremendously successful, crafting whodunnit capers for both the big screen and Netflix. Mystery has been, and remains, abundantly popular on television as well, with series as diverse as Only Murders in the Building and Mare of Easttown. These stories have taken on a whole plethora of tones. From Enola Holmes 3 to The Thursday Murder Club, however, detective stories have predominantly woven compelling mysteries. With that said, there is something especially special about bringing in non-human characters to these unique stories and giving them the agency to participate in these mysteries. The best animal movies allow their creature characters to be front and center, often in anthropomorphized speaking roles. Taking that kind of setup, but using it to tell a compelling mystery, is an appealing premise that has been shown to work wonders in some of these excellent films. These eight films are perhaps the best at doing so. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective A film with a greater focus on the main human character compared to most in the subgenre, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is still an important example in the larger canon of animal detective movies. The titular character is hired to find the Miami Dolphins' missing mascot, and a bold, comedic adventure swiftly follows. Jim Carrey's 1994 movies crafted a legendary run for the hilarious performer, but Ace Ventura might be the best of the bunch. With strong comedy and a plethora of beautiful animals appearing in the film, especially in Ace's apartment, it is an important addition to this list. With that said, despite the outsized characterization from Carrey, the film's setup does not explicitly allow for the animals to participate as detectives themselves. Despite this, the film's clear love for animals is palpable, helping it to remain a must-see. The Great Mouse Detective Some of the best stories in movies and TV have been inspired by Sherlock Holmes, and The Great Mouse Detective is one of the strongest examples. The 1986 animated feature from Disney constructs a late-19th-century mystery that pulls deeply from Sherlock Holmes lore. Basil, named after Holmes actor Basil Rathbone, is the lead character. He is a brilliant mouse detective who works alongside his assistant, Dr. Dawson, who must stop the evil Ratigan's twisted plans to usurp the queen. Turning the most memorable parts of the Sherlock Holmes lore into colorful animal characters helped this to become one of Disney's best movies of the 1980s. With rich characters and accessible design, the film is an exciting and entertaining family adventure. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu Granted, Pokémon are fictional animals, but this story is still an important entry in the larger canon of animal detective films. Pikachu himself is an electric mouse, and his adorable design is perfectly crafted in this excellent film, based on the popular series of Nintendo video games. Most exciting about this film is the way that it realizes a large world of beautiful, colorful creatures. The story takes place in Ryme City, which has been constructed to facilitate the various lifestyles of humans and Pokémon alike, allowing them to live in harmony and peace. The detective story at its core is a lot of fun, and seeing the animal-like creatures, including Magikarp, Eevee, Bulbasaur, and countless more on screen, makes this one of the most enjoyable family movies in recent years. G-Force This underrated 2009 family movie is one of the best kids' movies of the 2000s. The story centers around a group of genetically modified rodents, including a mole and a series of Guinea pigs, who must solve a mystery concerning microchips being used to take over the world. The colorful adventure features adorable creatures and a fantastic voice cast, including Sam Rockwell, Tracy Morgan, and Penélope Cruz. G-Force does a fantastic job creating tension and humor alike, and is a surprisingly fun family adventure that deserves to be better remembered. Guinea pigs are beautiful creatures and make excellent lead characters in this entertaining Disney film. An adventure with great appeal for all ages, G-Force remains one of the most entertaining animal mysteries ever made. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of the greatest detective movies of all time. Channeling the atmosphere of fantastic films like Chinatown, this Robert Zemeckis feature collides with the absurdity of classic animation, setting its action along the borders of Los Angeles and Toontown. With all of the familiar colorful characters that make their way into the film, including Betty Boop and the Brooms from Fantasia, it can be easy to forget that so many of them are actually animals. Donald Duck, Bugs Bunny, and Mickey Mouse appear, but it is Roger himself who is the most important. A toon first and foremost, Roger Rabbit is an excellent co-lead in this clever and hilarious two-hander. With a great eye for meta-commentary and humor, the film is among the best live-action and animated hybrid movies ever made. Zootopia Image via Disney It easy to forget that the Zootopia movies are actually detective stories at their core due to their excellent world-building and colorful characters. This first film does a fantastic job crafting a compelling mystery about animals being turned back to their undomesticated selves. Officer Judy Hopps is crafty and clever, and seeing her work to undo the mysteries in the film is a large part of what makes it work so well. Paired alongside Nick Wilde, the two make an unexpectedly satisfying pair while unveiling the mysteries of their titular city. The film continued this trend with another excellent mystery, the box office and Disney+ streaming hit Zootopia 2, proving that there is still room for many more stories and many more mysteries with these great characters. Turner & Hooch Turner & Hooch did a great job in flipping the buddy-cop formula on its head, giving Tom Hanks' Detective Turner an unusual pairing with Hooch, the pet dog of a murder victim. Hooch is the only witness to the murder, and the two are forced to work together to solve the case. Formulated with an odd-couple pairing, Turner is obsessively clean. When circumstances force him to take the dog home with him, Hooch upsets his peaceful domicile with typically dog-like destructive behavior, tearing the place apart. The film makes a terrible mistake with its upsetting ending, which viewers might want to prepare themselves emotionally for by looking up before watching the film. Still, the bond between the titular characters is charming, and the presence of Hooch goes a long way in making the detective story here that much stronger. The Sheep Detectives The Sheep Detectives is already perhaps the most underrated movie of 2026. Arguably even better than the Knives Out movies, this Hugh Jackman-starring movie tells the surprisingly sweet story of a group of sheep who must solve a mystery after their farmer is shockingly murdered. Featuring a bold voice cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd and many more, the movie also boasts a tremendous script, written by Chornobyl-scribe Craig Mazin. A tender and emotional offering, The Sheep Detectives might be the best animal detective mystery ever put to screen. Still, it owes a great deal to this tremendous lineage of strong and emotional character-focused storytelling.
