8 Best Batman Characters Introduced In The Past 10 Years

DC's Batman lore is stacked with the most popular heroes and villains in superhero media, so it takes a lot for a new addition to make an impression. Despite that, the last decade has seen some superlative additions to Gotham. From 2016-2026, DC's Batman comics have seen some superstar creative teams with blockbuster runs, adding new vigilantes, killers and antiheroes to the world of the Dark Knight. Here are the best of the bunch, scored on the quality of their appearances, their potential for future stories and how well they fit into the existing Batman mythos. ​​​​​For this list, we're only counting direct Batman characters, and not those introduced in related series like Nightwing or Batgirl, since those characters have been firmly established as their own franchises. Cheer (aka Silvanio Romero) Debuted in 2021's Batman: Urban Legends #4 | Created by Chip Zdarsky and Eddy Barrows Cheer has only appeared in one storyline so far, but he's one of the best ideas for a Batman villain in decades. Cheer is the creator of 'cheerdrops' - a unique drug based on Scarecrow's fear gas which causes the user to experience uncontrolled euphoria and hallucinations of their heart's desire. Batman's best villains relate to his personal psychology and how his worldview is expressed by Gotham itself. By promising happiness to a city beaten down by economic decline and constant supervillain attacks, Cheer set himself up as a twisted savior to Batman's city. He was even able to recruit other Gotham villains by weaponizing their hallucinations. Despite a similar 'smile' motif, Cheer set himself apart from the Joker with a very different methodology and outlook. Hopefully he returns soon, because of all the villains on this list, Cheer has the most promise for future stories. Miracle Molly (Mary Kowalski) Debuted in 2021's Batman Volume 3 #106 | Created by James Tynion IV and Jorge Jiménez Following the tradition of Gotham antiheroes like Catwoman and Anarky, Miracle Molly believes in an extreme anti-authoritarian credo, targeting Gotham's most powerful people on a mission to 'free' the city. Like all good antiheroes, Miracle Molly has a point, even as her anti-establishment philosophy naturally sets her at odds with billionaire Bruce Wayne. Miracle Molly is depicted as an inventor and hacker who flies above Gotham on a customized drone while turning the city's abandoned skyscrapers into impromptu bases. Her origin involved wiping her memory of her past life, reborn under her vigilante identity - an inversion of how Batman has dedicated his adult life to his childhood trauma. The Minotaur (Real Name Unknown) Debuted in 2025's Batman Volume 4 #4 | Created by Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez A recent addition to Batman lore, the Minotaur is a ruthlessly competent ganglord who quickly and efficiently brought together Gotham's existing crime families, forging them together into the Torus syndicate. While gangsters like Penguin have since questioned his rule, the Minotaur has so far kept them in line by executing their loved ones. Little is known about the Minotaur (save that he has seven fingers on each hand), but what's so refreshing about the character is his total competency. Minotaur created a whole new criminal underworld right under Batman's nose. Batman often deals with obsessive, insane villains, but the Minotaur doesn't need to be seen or understood - he wants money and control, and he'll do anything to get it. Ghost-Maker (aka Minhkhoa Khan) Debuted in 2020's Batman Volume 3 #100 | Created by James Tynion IV and Jorge Jiménez What if Batman didn't have a conscience? Ghost-Maker is a vigilante who trained alongside Bruce Wayne when the Dark Knight was wandering the Earth gathering skills, and is unable to feel empathy or fear. Sadly, the two ended up in a feud over Ghost-Maker's lethal tactics, and Batman banned his old friend from Gotham. Ghost-Maker returned in the modern day and was swayed by Batman's effectiveness, agreeing to abide by his rules in exchange for working together. DC hasn't done quite enough to make Ghost-Maker feel like a permanent addition to Batman lore, but the idea of 'a Batman who is unable to feel empathy' is a good one, and on top of his awesome cyborg ninja design, Ghost-Maker helps fill in the Batman lore before Batman. The Batman Who Laughs (aka Bruce Wayne of Earth -22) Debuted in 2017's Dark Days: The Casting #1 | Created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo A version of Batman from an alternate universe who was corrupted by the Joker, the Batman Who Laughs isn't for everyone. Indeed, part of the pitch is that he's a 'Bad Idea' from a Dark Multiverse created by the deepest, darkest fears of DC's biggest heroes. Whether you enjoy his bombastic presentation or find him too 'grimdark,' the Batman Who Laughs paid off the promise of 'evil Batman' like never before, becoming a threat to not just the world but the entire multiverse as the main villain behind the Dark Nights: Metal and Dark Nights: Death Metal events. Failsafe Debuted in 2022's Batman Volume 3 #125 | Created by Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jiménez Batman's 'No Kill' rule is often debated by fans, with Bruce believing that if he unleashes the rage and hate he feels for Gotham's villains, he'll never be able to cage it again. That fear manifested in the Failsafe robot - a Superman-class android created to neutralize Batman if he ever takes a life. Thanks to Penguin faking his death, Failsafe activated and beat down Batman, the Bat-Family and the Justice League in its mission to take out the Dark Knight, eventually teleporting him to another dimension. Failsafe was later possessed by the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh - Batman's twisted 'back-up personality' who believed the Dark Knight should operate with machine precision, and without Bruce Wayne's human flaws. As intimidating as Zur-En-Arrh's version of Failsafe was (above), there's also something to be said for the original android's Terminator-like focus while dismantling DC's greatest heroes. The Magistrate and Peacekeeper-01 Debuted in 2021's Future State: The Next Batman #1 | Created by Paul Jenkins and Jack Herbert Introduced as part of DC's flash-forward Future State event, the Magistrate are a private police force who took over Gotham, showing zero tolerance for any kind of law-breaking. It was genuinely exciting to see Batman on the backfoot, forced to play the insurgent against a group who outnumbered his Bat-Family twenty-to-one. The introduction of the Magistrate turned Gotham into a police state, offering a whole new vision of Batman, and answering those who consider the character fascist wish fulfillment. The villainous organization also forced Bruce to reconnect with the people of Gotham and outfox a sophisticated surveillance network. Compared to the larger organization, their pet super-soldier Peacekeeper-01 was less impactful, but watching Sean Mahoney go from troubled Arkham guard to Gotham's false savior was a compelling journey, and gave the rebel Dark Knight someone to actually punch. The Absolute Universe's Gotham Villains Debuted in 2024's Absolute Batman #1 | Created by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta DC launched its new Absolute Universe in 2024, depicting a universe built on the foundation of Darkseid's evil, where DC's biggest heroes are stripped of their traditional advantages and villains are elevated to new heights. Absolute Batman is currently DC's best-selling comic, and there's a reason, as its creative team radically reinvent the entirety of Batman mythos. Whether turning Two-Face, Penguin and Riddler into Bruce Wayne's broken childhood friends, Joker into a billionaire kaiju or the Robins into a mech-riding anti-Batman taskforce, Absolute Batman pushes all the dials up to eleven, and fans are loving it.
