The constant power escalation in the DC Universe makes powerscaling a complex task. The Flash often upgrade their speed to inconceivable levels, and Superman occasionally absorbs enough energy to power up to become near-omnipotent. Batman himself has received massive power-ups, like when he sat on Metron's Mobius Chair, which temporarily made him the God of Knowledge and granted him total awareness of the universe. Likewise, Hal Jordan once became the DC Universe's most dangerous villain as Parallax. Despite Superman's reputation as the ultimate DC powerhouse, several Justice League heroes can overpower the Man of Steel by circumventing his physical durability altogether. As fast as Superman might be, speedsters like Barry Allen and Wally West could use their mastery of the Speed Force to phase kryptonite directly inside his body before he registers what happened. Sorcerers like Doctor Fate and Zatanna have a whole arsenal of spells and techniques that could severely wound Superman by exploiting his vulnerability to magic. Meanwhile, Firestorm could alter the atomic structure of surrounding matter to synthesize lethal strains of radiation, and the Spectre's judgment could render Superman's physical strength useless. However, powerscaling isn't all about sheer power output. The Flash and Doctor Fate have a special kind of power that allows them to defeat much stronger opponents than themselves, but if they weren't allowed to tap into their external sources of power, characters as comparably weak as Catwoman could technically neutralize them in hand-to-hand combat. Martian Manhunter Is More Powerful Than Superman J'onn J'onzz Could Defeat Superman If He Really Needed Superman is the complete package when it comes to power in the Justice League, as he can match the Flash's speed, Doomsday's strength, Wonder Woman's combat strategy, and Batman's leadership skills. Only a few physically ultra-strong Justice Leaguers can match the Man of Steel in battle. Superman himself has admitted the Captain a.k.a. Shazam is his equal, while Aquaman and Wonder Woman have historically matched him in combat, and Supergirl, Power Girl, Big Barda, and Captain Atom's baseline strength is roughly the same. However, Martian Manhunter is definitely on a different level. Having similar abilities to Superman, being one of the last survivors of his extraterrestrial species, and standing out as one of Earth's most selfless superheroes, Martian Manhunter's parallels to Superman are more than clear. J'onn J'onzz's Martian physiology grants him vast muscular power on par with Kal-El, but his shapeshifting capabilities raise his strength considerably. Martian Manhunter can alter his bodily density at will to maximize the impact of his strikes and withstand physical attacks. He can expand his limbs, increase his size, and grow additional muscle tissue during combat to deliver devastating blows. In JLA #86, Superman himself admits that J'onn J'onzz is the strongest being on Earth and acknowledges that a serious confrontation would end in defeat for the Man of Steel. Pure strength aside, Martian Manhunter has a far more versatile array of abilities than Superman's already varied power set. J'onn's telepathy allows him to enter minds across stellar distances and disable brain function, and his control over his own atomic structure bestows optical energy blasts, invisibility, and intangibility. Martian Manhunter also has his own Kryptonite, but whereas Superman's body is naturally vulnerable to Kryptonite and magic, J'onn J'onnz's weakness to fire is more psychological than physical. Martian Manhunter Doesn't Want To Be Stronger Than Superman J'onn J'onnz Rarely Taps Into His Full Power Even though Martian Manhunter could easily become the Justice League's second Superman, he usually takes the role of a quiet detective who avoids the public spotlight. J'onn J'onnz's peaceful nature prevents him from being on the frontlines alongside more combat-oriented heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman, and allows flashier heroes to serve as the public face of heroism. His deep grief as the lone survivor of a dead planet reinforces this self-imposed isolation, and it cements him as an outsider who monitors humanity from the shadows rather than a celebrity champion. Superman inevitably surpasses Martian Manhunter over time due to his Kryptonian physiology and his role as Earth's foremost protector. While Martian Manhunter’s power is relatively static, Kal-El is a living solar battery, continuously absorbing yellow sunlight to push his physical limits to near-infinite heights. Superman is constantly pushed into the front lines, which grants him a relentless stream of combat experience that J'onn simply doesn't get at the same rate. With enough energy, experience, and motivation, Superman eventually outmatches all the Justice League heroes who are technically stronger than him, Martian Manhunter included.
