Published Nov 8, 2026, 4:01 PM EST Mark has been a comic book journalist for over 15 years and has interviewed comic book creators like Gail Simone and Caspar Wijngaard. And when he's not writing, he's working on beating his record of 1,200 comics read in a year. The Marvel Comics event Avengers: Armageddon is the perfect example of how to never judge a series until it’s over. The miniseries began with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, The Fantastic Four, and a few others going to stop Red Hulk from taking over a Symkaria. This is despite the United Nations telling the heroes to stand down. As the story continues, the former Captain America, David Colton, threw all of the world’s nukes into the sun. Except he missed the ones Russia was hiding, and how they turned the Red Hulk into a bomb. The result was the world losing faith in humanity and the U.N. funding S.H.I.E.L.D. to protect non-powered people. Things continue to get worse after that. Sam Wilson quit after Bucky's apparent death, Iron Man left New York, and Captain America doesn’t have part of his soul. To top it all off, Nick Fury Jr. is preparing for a war against the superpowered community. Luckily, no matter how bad things are, the best won’t leave the world unprotected, and this new Avengers team is exactly what the world needs. The Avengers Assembled Steve Rogers always believed that the Avengers roster wasn’t selected. Destiny brings them together. First, it was Loki’s mischief that caused Earth's Mightiest Heroes to come into existence. Decades later, a breakout on the raft created a new roster. Now, Mephisto's deals ending early have brought angels to Earth. This assembled the newest group of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes: Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Miracleman, and Wolverine. Fans of Marvel Comics’ Avengers may recognize this team from the Brian Michael Bendis days. What made that team special was that they were all heroes with a major connection to regular people. Obviously, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Logan are all known for being more down-to-earth than other Avengers. But Carol Danvers is too. Don’t forget, before she was flying through space, she was a military woman who was also a detective. And Miracleman may be a god, but he’s also someone who understands the plight of regular people. What makes this team perfect is that they’re closer to the people who now fear them. Obviously, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Logan are all known for being more down-to-earth than other Avengers, like Thor or T’Challa. But Carol Danvers is too. Don’t forget, before she flew through space, she was a military officer and a journalist. And Miracleman may be god-like, but he’s also someone who understands the plight of regular people. The New Avengers Roster Is Perfect Now that the world is scared of or dislikes heroes, a new team needs to assemble, and they must be trusted. This team has that in spades. “They can fear us. They can hate us. It doesn’t matter. Because we’ll always help. We’ll always fight back.” -Spider-Man Spider-Man may be the most loved hero in New York, and this is despite what the Daily Bugle used to print. Luke Cage was a mayor that people trusted long before he worked in the government. Daredevil is known as the protector of Hell’s Kitchen. Carol Danvers is a recognized Avenger. Lastly, while many people are slightly scared of Wolverine, he’s looked at more fondly thanks to his time in New Orleans with the X-Men. Captain Marvel's New Beginning When the Red Hulk exploded in Russia, Carol Danvers tried to absorb all of the blast's energy. She saved as many as she could, but thousands still died. Not only is that weighing heavily on her conscience, but absorbing the blast de-powered her by 90%. She can’t fly, and while bullets bounce off her, she says it hurts. Seeing Captain Marvel adjust to her lack of powers will be great for readers. For years, she’s been looked at as overpowered and kind of stuck up (the latter being far from true). Now, the non-believers will see what many have known for years. Carol Danvers’ powers don’t make her a great character. Writers like Kelly Thompson and Kelly Sue Deconnick did that. Spider-Man Is Finally A Leader Finally, the time has come to bring up the most important part of Chip Zdarsky’s Avengers, and that's Spider-Man being team leader. Peter has been on the front lines of battles before, but this is different. He will be the one leading Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It’s even more important because it comes at a time similar to Marvel Comics' Civil War, when the superheroes’ approval rating was at an all-time low. Now that Peter is in charge, he will have the team moving differently within this series and Amazing Spider-Man. Luckily, he has the respect of everyone on his team. They know that he’s stood among their best for years, and trust Spidey enough to follow him into Hell. Since it looks like Hell came to Earth, this happened right on time.
