62,000 working teachers fail UPTET: Will they lose their jobs? What SC said

More than 13 lakh candidates have qualified UPTET 2026. However, among the teachers already working in government schools, around 62,000 did not clear the eligibility test.According to the result data, 2,68,799 in-service teachers appeared for the examination, of whom 2,06,771 qualified.The figure assumes significance in light of a Supreme Court ruling that made the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) mandatory for serving teachers in certain circumstances.WHAT DID THE SUPREME COURT SAY?In September 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that TET is mandatory for teachers appointed under the Right to Education (RTE) framework and for serving teachers who wish to seek promotion. The court, however, provided different timelines depending on the teacher's remaining service period. Teachers with more than five years of service left were required to clear TET within two years to remain in service. Those with less than five years left could continue until retirement without clearing TET, but would not be eligible for promotion without qualifying the test.This means that failing UPTET 2026 does not automatically mean that a serving teacher will immediately lose their job. The implications depend on the teacher's appointment status, years of service and eligibility under the Supreme Court's directions.UP PLANS SEPARATE TEST FOR SERVING TEACHERS The Uttar Pradesh government has also indicated that it will conduct a separate TET for in-service teachers.Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said the state would organise a separate examination for serving teachers, with the aim of providing them another opportunity while ensuring a fair and transparent testing process.For the nearly 62,000 working teachers who did not qualify UPTET 2026, the next opportunity could therefore be significant.The latest results are thus unlikely to translate into an immediate job-loss situation.
