Darth Maul is now one of the most popular and best characters in Star Wars as a whole. From his first appearance in The Phantom Menace to his new, standalone animated Star Wars show Maul - Shadow Lord, Maul has only gotten better with time. A large part of Maul's popularity comes from his many recent appearances. Maul showed up in The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Maul - Shadow Lord as a major main villain, and he even had a live-action cameo at the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Despite Maul's huge number of recent appearances — Maul now has more screen time than Darth Vader — his best moment in Star Wars came six years ago in The Clone Wars. Darth Maul’s Best Star Wars Moment Comes In Season 7 Of The Clone Wars Maul's single greatest moment in The Clone Wars came in season 7, episode 10, "The Phantom Apprentice." In that episode, Maul has failed to draw Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker to Mandalore and kill them. Instead, Ahsoka Tano led the 501st Legion in the Siege of Mandalore and had one final dialog with Maul before battling him. Maul correctly predicts that Darth Sidious is preparing to overthrow the Republic, and Ahsoka pleads with him to help the Jedi "before it's too late," leading to Maul's best quote of all time. "Too late for what? The Republic to fall? It already has, and you just can't see it! There is no justice, no law, no order, except for the one that will replace it." This quote from Maul exemplifies so much of what makes him such a compelling villain. Maul has, at least in The Clone Wars, a flawed sort of prescience about things like Order 66 and Sidious' rise to power. He can see things on the horizon that even the wisest Star Wars characters are blind to, yet he's powerless to stop them. He's doomed to be on the losing side of everything he does in Star Wars, even when he does everything right. He's a tragic, Sisyphean figure, and this quote shows that better than anything else. Importantly, Maul is absolutely right here. The Republic has, in everything but name, already fallen. The Jedi may still be around, but the people of the Republic are eager for tyranny, frothing at the mouth at the very idea of the death of liberty, to paraphrase Padmé Amidala. At this point in The Clone Wars, there is no Republic left to save. Maul's biting insight and ability to so succinctly sum up the politics of really the entire prequel trilogy is unmatched. Add on top of that his incredible powers of persuasive rhetoric, and this quote gives you a great idea of why Maul is such a beloved character. There's also a lot to love technically about this speech. It features some of the most fluid and beautiful animation and the most inspired art direction, lighting, and blocking of The Clone Wars as a whole. Sam Witwer also delivers one of his greatest performances as Maul, his voice dripping in urgency and almost unhinged desperation. The entire scene plays out like a Greek tragedy in the best way possible. Everything about this scene was perfect, and there's a chance nothing Maul does in the future will ever top it. The Clone Wars Transformed Maul Into An All-Time Great Villain Maul's quote from The Clone Wars season 7 also does a fantastic job of showcasing how the animated show completely transformed him as a character. Maul started out in The Phantom Menace as a bit of a nothingburger. Like Boba Fett before him, he was a villain who looked cool, had a nifty double-bladed lightsaber, and died before he was properly utilized. Maul could have gone down as just Darth Sidious' nearly silent goon who killed Qui-Gon Jinn, but The Clone Wars didn't let him. He was no longer just a menacing Sith apprentice, he became one of the most tragically flawed characters in Star Wars as a whole. As previously mentioned, Maul took on an almost mythic Sisyphean role; doomed to fail over and over despite being able to see miles ahead. Maul changed quite a bit, but he was never able to overcome his own fatal flaws. The Clone Wars gave Maul so much more characterization and nuance. The show proved that he was eloquent, tactically brilliant, an incredible lightsaber duelist, and a man driven by an unending pit of rage, hatred, and a thirst for revenge. In another universe, he could have dominated the entire galaxy. Without The Clone Wars, Maul never would have become the legendary Star Wars villain he is today.
