I do not write about all offers that are available -- instead focusing on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same). Terms apply to the offers and benefits listed on this page.Citi Strata Elite earns 50% more points on unbonused spending than Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve, and those points can become American Airlines miles. It also costs $200 – $300 less per year. I’ve written a lot about the card’s enormous first-year value. But the more I’ve used the hotel benefit, the more I think there’s a case for the Citi Strata EliteSM Card (See rates and fees) beyond the initial bonus. Here are six things it does better than Amex Platinum and Sapphire Reserve. 1. American Airlines Is The U.S. Airline Transfer Partner I’d Choose Banks advertise how many transfer partners they have. A long list can include many I even actively avoid (Aeromexico, Thai Airways). Most banks are also limited in whom they can work with because major airline and hotel cobrand card agreements usually include exclusivity provisions that limit what competing banks can offer. American Express has Delta. Chase has United. Citi has American. Of those three, I’d take American AAdvantage. Strata Elite points transfer to American at 1:1. And American still offers some terrific partner redemptions. However, some of my best American redemptions are just regular domestic coach trips. I’ve written about getting 4 cents and even 8 cents per mile from economy awards. American will sometimes make a flight cheap in miles while keeping the cash fare high. You don’t need to want a first class suite halfway around the world to get value from this program. Citi still has international partners I want, including Air France KLM Flying Blue, Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways. Chase’s Hyatt transfers are a real advantage on the hotel side. (I still wish Bank of America had its own transferable points program, with Alaska’s Atmos Rewards as a partner.) 2. The Hotel Credit Works Beyond A Short List Of Luxury Properties Strata Elite offers up to $300 off prepaid hotel stays of two nights or longer booked through Citi Travel each calendar year. The discount comes off when you book, and applies to the room cost before taxes and fees. You can use it at ordinary hotels and independent properties, without restricting yourself to a luxury collection. Amex Platinum’s $600 annual hotel credit is split into two $300 periods and requires Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings. Sapphire Reserve’s $500 The Edit credit is limited to that collection, with a maximum of $250 per qualifying booking. Chase also has an additional 2026 hotel credit, but that one is restricted to selected brands. Those programs can provide real value through breakfast, property credits and hotel loyalty benefits. Citi’s advantage is the much broader choice of hotels where I can use the discount. And I haven’t found that using Citi’s credit requires giving back the savings through a higher room rate. In January, I compared the Marriott at LaGuardia Airport: Citi Travel was $156 before taxes, while Marriott’s own member rate was $176. That’s $20 less per night before applying the credit. I still compare the room and cancellation terms, but Citi Travel has been competitive or even cheaper. I’ve also had little difficulty getting Marriott hotels to add my Bonvoy number at check-in and honor on-property benefits. Earlier this year I used the Strata Elite credit at a Marriott and received club lounge access. I similarly had no problem getting status recognition on a bank portal booking at a Westin this month. These third-party bookings generally aren’t supposed to be eligible for hotel points, elite-night credit or elite benefits. 3. It’s A Better Card For Everyday Spending Strata Elite earns 1.5 points per dollar on spending outside its bonus categories. Sapphire Reserve and Amex Platinum earn just one. You can do better with any bank pairing its primary card with a second card that offers different earn. Generally you’re permitted to pool those points. 4. Six Points Per Dollar On Weekend Evening Dining Is Fantastic Citi Nights earns six points per dollar at restaurants from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, and again from 6 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday, all times Eastern. This works at restaurants generally, including qualifying restaurant delivery services. You don’t have to pick from a bank’s restaurant reservation list. Citi uses the time the purchase is authorized, so a Friday dinner doesn’t lose the bonus just because the charge posts on Monday. Outside Citi Nights, restaurant spending earns 3x. And Citi’s other big accelerators are 12x on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi Travel, and 6x on airfare booked there. You don’t earn points on the hotel spending covered by the $300 benefit. For airfare booked directly with an airline, Amex Platinum’s 5x and Sapphire Reserve’s 4x beat Citi’s 1.5x. Big Useful Credits Instead Of Many Small Ones I’ve laid out how to use the Strata Elite credits, but the basic approach is pretty simple: book a hotel stay and buy an American Airlines ticket. In addition to the $300 hotel benefit, there’s a $200 annual Splurge credit. Select American Airlines as one of your eligible merchants before purchasing, and a ticket billed directly by American qualifies. You don’t have to find incidental fees to use it on, as with Amex Platinum’s airline fee credit. The other choices are Best Buy, 1stDibs, Live Nation and Future Personal Training. You can activate up to two merchants at a time and use the credit over multiple eligible purchases. For me, American makes this easy. If the hotel benefit and Splurge credit replace $500 you’d have spent anyway, they leave just $95 of Citi’s $595 annual fee to cover. And both benefits run by calendar year, without dividing the money into monthly allowances. There’s also up to $200 a year for Blacklane, divided into $100 for January through June and $100 for July through December. 6. The Annual Fee Is Lower The annual fees are $595 for Citi Strata Elite vs $795 for Sapphire Reserve and $895 for Amex Platinum. You still get a premium travel card: Priority Pass lounge access with up to two guests, four Admirals Club passes each calendar year for eligible American or oneworld travel, travel protections, and up to $120 for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application every four years. And the first year still offers a lot. The current offer is 75,000 bonus points after spending $6,000 in the first three months. At 1.5 cents apiece, that’s $1,125 in points before counting what you earn from the spending itself. Someone opening the card now can use the hotel and Splurge benefits during the rest of 2026 and again in 2027, before their first anniversary. That’s up to $1,000 from those two benefits alone. If those credits replace spending you’d make anyway, the bonus plus the credits less the $595 fee comes to $1,530 in first-year value, before Blacklane, lounge access or points earned from purchases.
