6 must-watch 3D printing YouTube channels you should subscribe to

A lot of 3D printing video content boils down to fairly simple printer reviews that often draw very similar conclusions. While being clued in on the latest printers is all well and good, there’s a lot more to the hobby than that. Today I’m going to highlight six of my favorite 3D printing-focused YouTube channels. CNCKitchen More than just videos German YouTuber Stefan, better known as CNCKitchen, runs arguably one of the better-known YouTube channels with a focus on 3D printing. This is one of the first channels I really latched onto when I became interested in the hobby, with professional production, a friendly presenter style, and a varied catalog of videos to work your way through. Stefan posts once per month (sometimes more), which includes 3D printer reviews, technique guides, and highlights for whatever he’s been up to. He has also developed a fair number of personal projects, like free tool BumpMesh which adds textures to 3D prints and a world-first insert extractor for removing hardware from existing 3D prints. I’m also a big fan of his research, which clearly requires a lot of time and work. He has tested various methods of “annealing” 3D prints in order to make them stronger like casting models in plaster, plus he blended cow manure into PLA and explored the concept of printing with it. Zack Freedman 3D printing royalty Zack Freedman is the mind behind Gridfinity, arguably 3D printing’s most successful open-source project to date. This grid-based modular storage system combines base plates with bins to keep desktops, drawers, and everything else organized. When he’s not designing new models, Zack is running a YouTube channel to showcase his latest work and insight into what makes projects tick. His videos focus a lot on what he’s making, techniques like copying parts in modeling software, weird filament types, and 3D printing with unorthodox materials like chocolate. Not every video Zack puts out concerns 3D printing, with a dash of smart home, PC building, and electronics projects thrown in for good measure. He’s also made an interesting video about the homemade contraption that he wears on his face, which many commenters mistake for Google Glass. ModBot 3D printing hardware and beyond ModBot is a channel that mainly focuses on 3D printing hardware and filament. That means lots of reviews, not just of printers but also modifications and add-ons for printer systems like ELEGOO’s CANVAS for the Centauri Carbon and aftermarket chamber heaters. Filament also gets a fair amount of airtime, particularly less common flexible materials like foaming TPU (which can be really challenging to print with), glass fiber TPU, and PEBA. If you’re interested in improving your 3D printed experience by looking beyond the wall of what manufacturers like Bambu Lab have put up, ModBot is worth a watch. Maker’s Muse Don’t try this at home Maker’s Muse is all about empowering creativity through technology, which explains the slightly offbeat approach to content you’ll find on the channel. A lot of the focus is on testing out weird techniques and hacks, then dispelling any myths that surround them. A lot of these are things you really wouldn’t want to do at home for fear of endangering you or your printer, which makes them all the more entertaining to watch. The channel has also started a 3D printing mastery series, in which concepts like layer height and infill patterns and density are explained for all ability levels. There are also a good number of software tips, including slicer settings and CAD concepts to be aware of. Beyond this, the channel leans into some 3D printing-adjacent topics like UV printing. Slant3D Life on the print farm Slant3D is the YouTube channel of the print farm of the same name. The channel uploads a weekly podcast detailing what they’re up to and what’s going on in the world of 3D printing, along with useful guides, advice, tips, and explainers. The channel often takes on challenges, like improving 3D printed LEGO or 3D printing a part that was previously believed to be impossible. They’ve also been known to “steal” designs and improve them for other creators (and YouTube views, obviously). In addition to polished and illuminating content, Slant3D provides some insight into a side of 3D printing that many home enthusiasts don’t see: what it’s like running a large manufacturing operation that depends on printers to stay in business. Proper Printing Let him cook Proper Printing is the YouTube channel of Jón Schone, a creator who is affiliated with Prusa and who moved to Prague in order to take the company up on their collaborative offer. His videos can mostly be described as him building weird and wonderful things. These “slice of life” videos usually involve Jón introducing a concept, breathing life into it, and then documenting how it all pans out along the way. There are some really bonkers ideas here, including using a grill plate as a print bed for a 3D printer, pushing a Bambu Lab X1C to its limit by printing PEEK at 420ºC, and 3D printing a kayak on a treadmill.
