Voldemort may be the most dangerous Dark Wizard in Harry Potter, but he's far from the most disturbing villain. The Harry Potter stories mature with their audience; The Philosopher's Stone (or The Sorcerer's Stone in the United States) is very much a children's book, while The Deathly Hallows features the franchise's darkest moments. That means the villains progressively get worse, as the story unveils more of Voldemort's Death Eaters. And yet, the stories never quite focus on just how shocking they really are. Looking back, I can't help feeling there's something of a fairy-tale quality to Harry Potter here. That's the beauty of a fairy-tale villain; they have a surprising depth to them, one that speaks to the vulnerability of children in particular and shines a light on human fears. We tend to look past them, focusing on the heroism of Harry Potter and his ilk, but they're worth a much deeper look. So here are the six most disturbing villains in Harry Potter. 6 Bellatrix Lestrange Let's start with Bellatrix Lestrange, played by Helena Bonham Carter in the movies. The movies deliberately emphasized Bellatrix's evil, making her look like the traditional wicked witch, but the books actually make her a lot more disturbing; there, she's something of a beauty who is nevertheless cruel and malevolent. Bellatrix stands out among the Death Eaters, not because of her power but because of her character; she is Voldemort's most devoted, enthusiastic followers. All the Death Eaters are cruel. But Bellatrix displays a giddy sense of joy at the prospect of killing or torturing. She's terrifyingly unpredictable, quite willing to sacrifice a tactical advantage for the short-term glee of causing suffering, and you never know what spell she will unleash next. You're genuinely terrified when she launches an attack on Ginny Weasley during the Battle of Hogwarts, because Bellatrix is a killer by nature, and Ginny is truly out of her depth at that moment. But this is the genius of the Harry Potter stories; Bellatrix is built up as a dangerous villain, one of the most powerful and dangerous Death Eaters. But, in the end, she falls; I still remember whooping in joy when I first read her defeat, when Molly Weasley stepped in and proved to the whole world that Bellatrix Lestrange could be beaten. The villain may be disturbing, but that makes the victory all the sweeter. 5 Barty Crouch, Jr. Now let's turn to David Tennant's Barty Crouch, Jr., one of the most chilling villains in the whole Harry Potter saga. Another committed Death Eater, he was saved from Hogwarts when his parents conspired to send his mother there in his place (courtesy of Polyjuice Potion). Barty Jr. was essentially kept under house arrest by his father for years, but ultimately broke free thanks to Voldemort and committed patricide. Given murder scars the soul in Harry Potter, this is surely an unspeakable evil. Barty Crouch, Jr. successfully infiltrated Hogwarts by impersonating Alastor Moody. This feat is all the more remarkable given it meant acting under the watchful eye of Professor Dumbledore himself, and yet he pulled it off. In the guise of Mad-Eye Moody, Barty Jr. taught Hogwarts classes and built up a close friendship with Harry himself. And yet, oddly, the most disturbing aspect of this subterfuge lies in his treatment of Neville Longbottom. Harry Potter villains don't tend to be subtle. But Barty Jr. took Neville under his wing, treating him with surprising respect. This wasn't a necessary part of the disguise; it was clearly a spontaneous decision, perhaps rooted in some unexpected seed of compassion. But here's the really odd thing; Barty Jr. was one of the Death Eaters who had used the Cruciatus Curse on Neville's parents, breaking their minds. Neville was unknowingly spending time with one of the people who destroyed his family. 4 Voldemort Image via Everett Collection Next comes Voldemort himself (played by Ralph Fiennes in the movies), considered the greatest Dark Wizard of all time—and that's even before he acquired the Elder Wand. Where other villains like Barty Crouch, Jr. still contain a seed of goodness, Voldemort had long since sacrificed any humanity that he ever possessed. We got a sense of just how dangerous Tom Riddle really was in The Half-Blood Prince, with Dumbledore revealing how Tom Riddle first learned he was a wizard. Even then, Voldemort loved the fact his magic gave him control over others. Voldemort was always shown as power-hungry, but this manifested in a fascinating way; he believed the most powerful wizard would be able to conquer death itself. This motive is hidden through the first books and movies, although I remember suggesting it in online discussions based on the fact his followers were called "Death Eaters." Voldemort's focus on death means every murder he committed was a declaration of his power, likely a major reason he found Hocruxes so attractive. Voldemort's Hocruxes are what make this villain so truly disturbing, though. A Horcrux is (typically) created when a wizard chooses to split their soul in dark magic that involves murder. Voldemort chose to split his soul seven times; he considered seven the most powerful magic number, and this was intended as the ultimate demonstration of his superiority. Chillingly, even the fragments of Voldemort's soul possessed enough power to influence others, as Ginny and Harry learned to their cost in The Chamber of Secrets. 3 Wormtail Timothy Spall played Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter movies, one of the most chilling villains in the entire story. An unregistered Animagus, Pettigrew was Voldemort's agent in the Order of the Phoenix. He took advantage of James Potter's trust in his friends, tricking him so he became the Potters' Secret Keeper. After Voldemort's defeat at Godric's Hollow, he manipulated Sirius Black into taking the fall for him. It's then that he becomes truly shocking. Taking on the form of a rat, Pettigrew slipped into the Weasley family as the rat "Scabbers." He spent twelve years in animal form, growing up alongside the Weasleys, becoming their faithful pet. Originally owned by Percy, he was passed on to Ron. When his identity was revealed, Ron backed away in utter disgust, realizing he'd let Scabbers sleep in his bed. There's something quite sick about this particular dark wizard. And yet, Wormtail ultimately redeemed himself (although the movies don't handle this story particularly well). He wound up owing Harry Potter a debt for saving his life, and he faltered at a crucial moment, thereby saving Potter. By that time, Voldemort had given Wormtail a magical hand; to Wormtail's horror, his own hand killed him for his betrayal of the Dark Lord. A disturbing end to a truly disgusting villain. 2 Dolores Umbridge Played by Dame Imelda Staunton, Dolores Umbridge is a surprising villain—one who has very few direct connections to the Death Eaters. Umbridge is a bureaucrat who loves power, and who frankly hates children. She made her presence felt in Order of the Phoenix when she was assigned to Hogwarts as part of Fudge's attempts to undermine Dumbledore, and gleefully abused her power (and the students). Her punishments were brutal and severe, as Harry learned at his cost. Order of the Phoenix is one of the most adult stories in the saga, in part because of Umbridge's fate; Hermione eventually manipulated events so she was captured by the Centaurs and dragged away into the forest. We don't know what they did to her, but it left a mark, because she returned deeply traumatized. The implications here are shockingly mature, because centaurs are known for dragging women away in legend. Umbridge returned in The Deathly Hallows, now possessing a Horcrux (which, again, shows how dark her tastes really are). She was one of the bureaucrats who adapted most easily to the Death Eater takeover of the Ministry of Magic, simply because her character had more in common with them than with anyone else. In truth, she probably prospered during Voldemort's ascension, showing just how truly evil she really is. 1 Fenrir Greyback But in first place, as the most disturbing Harry Potter villain of all, is Fenrir Greyback (played by Dave Legeno). We get the full lowdown on him in The Half-Blood Prince, and it's truly horrific: "Fenrir Greyback is, perhaps, the most savage werewolf alive today. He regards it as his mission in life to bite and to contaminate as many people as possible; he wants to create enough werewolves to overcome the wizards. Voldemort has promised him prey in return for his services. Greyback specializes in children... Bite them young, he says, and raise them away from their parents, raise them to hate normal wizards." It's not just that Greyback is a werewolf; he's one who deliberately chooses to hunt down and turn children, separating them from their parents and grooming them to spread his savage abuse across the world. Most werewolves only attack when they're fully transformed, but Greyback was known for striking and killing in human, wolf, or even half-transformed form. Poor Bill Weasley fell foul of him, and Harry Potter never told us the fate of Lavendar Brown after Greyback lunged at her.
