He’s also likely your favorite superhero's favorite superhero because he’s more than a hero. Captain America epitomizes everything it means to be a good person and continues to fight for those who can’t or have trouble doing it themselves. Maybe most importantly, he remains an inspiration for people in and outside comic books. One of Captain America’s most definitive assets, on top of Super Soldier Serum-enhanced fighting abilities, is that he’s a phenomenal leader. Sometimes he gives a speech that motivates his teammates and soldiers to give the battle everything they’ve got. Other times, just being there on the battlefield and seeing him never give up or even get tired is enough to keep people fighting. However, no matter how good he is, he’s not the best leader in Marvel Comics. 6 Luke Cage The Closest Thing To Captain America Since Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers #22 (a Civil War tie-in), Power Man has been the closest thing to Steve Rogers. When it was time for him to put up or shut up, he didn't falter. He fought back against S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Gestapo-like forces and inspired an entire neighborhood to stand up and be accounted for. When Steve Rogers surrendered at the end of Marvel Comics' Civil War, Luke didn't follow. He led his Avengers without the need to be called their leader. In fact, to Luke’s confusion, the roster thought he was the leader, while he didn't think he was. It was the perfect example of leading by example. Luke doesn’t just encourage superpowered people to be better. At the end of Devil's Reign, the people of New York City voted him to replace Wilson Fisk as Mayor of New York City. He’s truly an inspiration to everyone he encounters or even sees him in action. 5 Blink A Consistently Underrated High Achiever Clarice Ferguson (Blink) was forged in fire. First, she grew up in the harsh, dystopian universe of the Age of Apocalypse. Right after that, Blink became a member of a team of reality-hopping mutants, the Exiles, without her consent. She was forced to be their leader, but still managed to guide them to victory on their first mission. Once she learned more about them, the Exiles functioned like a well-oiled machine. She helped them defeat a corrupt Phoenix Force, King Hyperion, and the most dangerous version of Proteus in Marvel Comics history. Sadly, people died along the way, but Blink understood the consequences and kept moving forward. Blink is so good that she could lead the Great Lakes Avengers into a fight with Thanos and somehow win. She has an incredible ability to get the best out of people, and that’s the mark of a fantastic leader. For example, she kept Beak alive in the harshest universes. Not only that, he helped save the day a few times. It’s doubtful that even Steve Rogers could do that. 4 Storm Goddess, Witch, Amazing Leader Somehow, it seems like comic book fans forget that Ororo Munroe is one of the X-Men’s greatest leaders. Among her accomplishments was when she didn’t have her powers and challenged Scott Summers (Cyclops) for leadership of the team in Uncanny X-Men # 201. She defeated him and led her team despite not being the goddess that she’s known to be. Later, during the Krakoan Era, Storm became the Regent of the Sol System. It was a title she took with the seriousness that she approaches everything. In that time, she united mutants and fought back against forces that should have killed her team. Yet, she succeeded and remained on the front line. Marvel fans will get an opportunity to see Storm’s skills as a leader in Maximum X-Men. She recruited Wolverine, Firestar, Colossus, Psylocke, Bishop, Iceman, and Justice in an era where the Avengers may not be welcomed. It’s a chance for mutants to be looked at in a better light. However, let’s not hold our breath on that. 3 Cable The Future's Steve Rogers Successor In a future when the world is in constant war with mutants against humans, humans against humans, and mutants against mutants, Nathan Dayspring Summers was the man fighting back. Sadly, this wasn’t the life that Cable chose. He was destined (or forced) to become a time-traveling soldier. Nathan is the perfect combination of Steve Rogers and Nick Fury. For many, he is the guy who runs into battle before everyone else to show that he won’t ask anyone to do something he won’t. Unfortunately, the Nick Fury side of him isn’t always a good thing. He tends not to tell his team everything because it’s need-to-know. With that being said, sometimes it’s a good thing. Another good thing that makes him an elite leader is knowing when to let someone else do it. During Uncanny Avengers and multiple X-Men teams, Nathan has allowed others to take charge and only offered advice. Sometimes, being a leader is knowing when not to be in charge. 2 Nick Fury Easy To Hate, But Great Nonetheless The kind of loyalty that Nick Fury inspires is amazing. Since before World War 2, Fury has been a leader of people on some of the harshest battlefields in history. There have been times when he’s had to make tough decisions that led to the deaths of people close to him and done things that have made teammates and friends hate him. Nevertheless, people still trust him enough to guide them into a fight. As the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury prided himself on keeping Earth spinning and didn’t let his personal feelings about something stop him from doing what was right. Sadly, a lot of the time it meant that he lied to his teammates about their mission. A good example of this was in 2004’s Secret War, where people were hurt, killed, and had their reputations ruined. Everything that was just said may lead you to question whether or not Fury belongs on this list. But despite the lies and the pain he's caused, people like Captain America, Black Widow, and Wolverine will still join him if he calls. They may hate him at times, but they trust him enough that he’d only call if it was important. That's why they'll follow him to Hell and back. 1 Cyclops The Perfect Leader There isn’t a better leader in comic books than Scott Summers. That’s a bold statement with people like Superman, Batman, and Captain America running around, but let’s look at the facts. First, Cyclops isn’t just a team leader. For years, he was the representative of an entire race of mistreated people. Mutants were attacked, killed, and verbally assaulted every day of their lives, and Scott Summers fought back for them. Sometimes that meant getting bottles and tomatoes thrown at him and not fighting back, but he took the punishment. He knew that he would rather take the abuse, so others didn’t have to. Second, he plans for every contingency. He understands that anyone and everything could come after the X-Men, so he has to be prepared. One time he was asked if something was Plan B. He replied by saying that lettering his plans makes it seem like he only had 26. Scott Summers has all the qualities that a good leader needs. That’s without talking about how he motivates his people, adapts when his opponents change tactics, and doesn’t need to be liked to be in charge.
