Intel has had a colorful history over the years. While many people have made the switch to AMD Ryzen, plenty still remain loyal to Intel—and for good reasons. If you spent a lot of money on an Intel CPU years ago, it's reasonable to expect it to last a very long time. Or perhaps you're building a budget PC and found an older Intel chip that looks like a compelling deal. Whatever the case, be careful with the CPUs on this list, because they've long since outstayed their welcome. The Core i7-2600K has been living on borrowed time for years Time to retire Sandy Bridge for good The i7-2600K is a pretty old chip that came out way back in 2011, so even though it was one of the best consumer-grade processors when it launched, its appearance on today's list should hopefully come as a surprise to no one. This 4-core, 8-thread Sandy Bridge processor was beloved by enthusiasts for its powerful single-core performance in games and apps, which allowed it to stay relevant for many years. It was incredibly overclockable, with many users pushing the stock 3.8GHz Turbo Boost clock up to 4.5GHz with appropriate cooling. However, no amount of raw performance can save it from old age—not that it has a lot of it compared to modern CPUs anyway. This CPU and everything around it is simply too old for a modern machine. DDR3 offers a fraction of the memory bandwidth available from modern DDR4 and DDR5 platforms, and the CPU only supports PCIe 2.0. The ancient interface can become particularly limiting with some modern budget GPUs that rely on fewer but faster PCIe lanes, so you can't just drop in a budget graphics card to upgrade such an old system. If you're still rocking this chip, you're years overdue for an upgrade. The Core i7-4790K was a legend, but its time is up It earned its retirement Credit: Ismar Hrnjicevic / How-To Geek The i7-4790K was one of Intel's best CPUs of all time. Like the 2600K, it held up incredibly well for years thanks to its excellent single-core performance, while its 4 cores and 8 threads kept it surprisingly competitive against CPUs that came out years later. Although it wasn't quite as overclockable as the 2600K, it was built on a much more efficient 22nm process and came with a respectable 4.4GHz Turbo Boost clock from the factory, which made it more than enough for most gamers. Unfortunately, the 4790K still falls victim to old age, as this chip is now 12 years old. Even entry-level chips have vastly superior IPC (Instructions Per Clock). Thanks to several generational leaps in architectural efficiency, budget chips can now run circles around the once-legendary 4790K. And although its PCIe 3.0 support makes modern graphics card upgrades more feasible (but far from ideal), its reliance on slower DDR3 memory makes it a poor choice for many modern applications and games. Depending on the motherboard, this CPU can support either DDR3L or the much faster DDR4 RAM that's still relevant today. However, that alone isn't enough to hide the fact that this CPU came out in early 2017. It's an old processor that performs about as well as you'd expect. The worst part of the i5-7600K's design is its 4-core, 4-thread architecture. It came out in an era when single-core performance was king in both apps and games, but now that things have shifted in favor of more cores and threads, the i5-7600K is being left behind. In short, you'd be wasting your hard-earned dollars if you combined DDR4, which is a hot commodity right now, with this old CPU that's worth less than a stick of 8GB DDR4 RAM on the used market. The Core i3-8100 was never great, but it's especially bad today Definitely time to upgrade Credit: Jason Fitzpatrick / How-To Geek The Intel Core i3-8100 is a generation newer than the i5-7600K, but that doesn't mean much when both CPUs were built on the same 14nm node and use a 4-core, 4-thread design. In fact, the i3-8100 is a bit weaker, but it was also considerably cheaper at just $120, making it a compelling pick for budget gaming and office PCs throughout late 2017 and 2018. Given that popularity, it's not surprising that some people are still running this old chip today. You can still encounter it relatively frequently in the wild. However, just because the i3-8100 technically meets the minimum requirement for running Windows 11 doesn't necessarily make it a good processor. Its lack of Hyper-Threading and measly 3.6GHz base clock with no Turbo Boost make it an extremely underpowered CPU for running modern apps, especially when you consider that its IPC is several generations behind that of modern Intel and AMD chips. The Core i7-8700K is still fast enough to fool you into keeping it This is a hard one to let go Credit: Patrick Campanale / How-To Geek Okay, so the i3-8100 was a budget-oriented CPU from 2017, so it stands to reason that a flagship model from the same generation would be considerably better—and it is. On paper, the i7-8700K sounds like it should still be a fairly capable CPU to this day. It has a 6-core, 12-thread design that you can argue is still the sweet spot for many modern games in 2026, and it has a boost clock speed of up to 4.7GHz with some overclocking potential. It can also run Windows 11 and a wide range of modern games and programs, thanks to its extensive instruction set support, although it notably lacks AVX-512. However, even the i7-8700K isn't immune to aging, and after almost 10 years, it's getting harder to justify keeping it in your main machine when newer CPUs are considerably better. You'd need to pair it with an appropriate LGA1151 motherboard to get the most out of this chip, including features like XMP memory support and NVMe SSD support. When you put all those things together, the platform simply isn't worth investing the money these parts tend to go for on the used market, as you'd ultimately still end up with an outdated machine. The Core i5-11400 still looks modern, which makes it a trap for new PC builders Intel fumbled the transition Credit: Justin Duino / How-To Geek At the surface level, the i5-11400 looks like a fairly compelling CPU for a budget build today. The i5-11400 is a 6-core, 12-thread chip that came out in 2021, making it only five years old. It's not exactly the latest technology has to offer, but a chip that's this old should theoretically still be a fine pick for an office or 1080p gaming PC. However, its age is somewhat misleading, as the Rocket Lake processors that the i5-11400 belongs to are ultimately built on the much-refined but ultimately mature 14nm node that dates all the way back to Intel's 6th-generation Skylake chips. AMD had already been building chips on TSMC's 7nm node for a couple of years by that point and was working toward 5nm, which makes the i5-11400 look like ancient technology by comparison. It runs surprisingly hot and gets inefficient when power limit restrictions are removed, which makes newer budget chips make way more sense. Aside from that, while the i5-11400 does support PCIe Gen 4, which should make it a bit more relevant when pairing it with budget GPUs and NVMe SSDs, the LGA 1200 socket is ultimately a dead end with a severely limited upgrade path. Intel's 12th-generation Alder Lake chips are a substantially better choice, with a couple more generations to upgrade to if you're on a very tight budget, and it's what I strongly recommend picking over the 11400 if you're dead-set on going with Intel. Some of these old CPUs can still make sense today, but context matters While most of the CPUs I've mentioned today don't make much sense in a modern Windows office or gaming PC anymore, that doesn't mean they're ready for the recycling bin. If you're running Linux, you can stretch this older hardware surprisingly far, and these chips can also make a great foundation for a low-cost home server built from old PC parts. Just be wary of their power consumption, because some of these aging CPUs can draw far more power than their performance is worth, making a cheaper, more modern alternative the better choice in the long run.
