(Representative image)Five undertrial prisoners lodged at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison have been booked for assaulting a jail warder and attempting to strangle him during a confrontation over prison security procedures, police said.The accused have been identified as Mohammad Muzamil, Abdul Shafwan, Mohammad Rizwan, Niyaz and Kalandar Shafi. All five are currently lodged in the prison in connection with a murder case.According to the complaint, the incident took place on September 2 when warder Manjunath Haveli visited Annex-1 of the prison to collect information about an inmate whose case was scheduled to be heard by the Life Convict Review Committee.CONFRONTATION OVER ITEMS BROUGHT INTO PRISONThe FIR states that Muzamil confronted Haveli over an incident that had occurred on August 22. According to the complaint, Haveli had stopped certain additional items allegedly brought by Muzamil while he was being transferred from the security section from being taken inside the prison.The earlier incident reportedly resurfaced during Haveli’s visit to Annex-1 on September 2. Muzamil allegedly abused the warder, threatened him and punched him in the face and nose. Haveli sustained bleeding injuries following the alleged assault, the complaint stated.FOUR OTHERS JOIN ATTACKThe situation allegedly escalated when the other four undertrials joined Muzamil in attacking the warder.According to the FIR, the prisoners allegedly dragged Haveli into another room, where they continued assaulting him. The accused are also alleged to have attempted to strangle the warder during the confrontation.Prison staff who were present nearby noticed the assault and intervened, according to the complaint. They allegedly managed to rescue Haveli from the prisoners and prevent the attack from continuing.The incident was subsequently reported to prison authorities, following which a complaint was filed against the five undertrial prisoners.CASE REGISTERED AGAINST FIVE UNDERTRIALSA case has been registered against Mohammad Muzamil, Abdul Shafwan, Mohammad Rizwan, Niyaz and Kalandar Shafi based on a complaint filed by central prison in-charge superintendent Manjunatha HG.The allegations include assaulting and threatening a prison official and attempting to strangle him during the confrontation.The five accused remain undertrial prisoners in connection with a murder case. The latest case relates to the alleged assault inside the prison and is separate from the proceedings in the murder case for which they are currently lodged there.Police and prison authorities are investigating the incident, including the circumstances that led to the confrontation and the alleged role played by each of the five prisoners.
